CHICAGO -- It took three attempts to make the UFC bantamweight title rematch between T.J. Dillashaw and Renan Barao happen.

And when the bout finally went off Saturday at UFC on FOX 16, it looked a whole lot like the first.

Dillashaw schooled Barao to retain the title he took from Barao back at UFC 173 on Memorial Day weekend last year. Dillashaw won via fourth-round TKO in the main event at United Center.

"I had him where I wanted him, but he's a pretty tough guy," DIllashaw (12-2) said. "I finally cornered him and got the finish."

It became clear from the outset that Dillashaw was faster, stronger, and had more energy in the tank than the former champion. Dillashaw used his lead left hand to relentlessly batter Barao. He also pressured and relentlessly pursued him in order to cut off the angles from which Barao likes to throw his kick.

Dillashaw almost seemed to be mocking Barao, as he kept his hands low for much of the fight. But Barao was never able to take advantage of the taunting target. But the end of the second round, Barao, who was rumored to have had a tough weight cut, was visibly sucking wind.

If there were any questions about the way the fight was going, Dillashaw seemed to answer them late in the third. Dillashaw, circling away, with his hands by his waist, darted in and drilled an unsuspecting Barao with a right hand that seemed to break his will.

Barao survived a late flurry at the end of the third, but had no answer when Dillashaw opened up another vicious flurry to start the fourth. Herb Dean waved it off at the 35-second mark.

That puts an end to a strange saga. The two were scheduled to rematch last summer at UFC 177 in Sacramento, but Barao's weight cut went awry and he was pulled the day before the event for unheralded Joe Soto. The two were also supposed to meet in the main event of UFC 186 in April in Montreal, but a Dillashaw rib injury waved off the bout.

CHICAGO -- Miesha Tate wanted to come out and make a statement Saturday night when she met Jessica Eye at UFC on FOX 16.

She was looking for a finish, the sort of emphatic victory she needed to get another shot at Ronda Rousey's UFC bantamweight title.

And while she didn't get it, Tate (17-5) was aggressive throughout, nearly finished the bout several times, and put in a dominant performance when she needed it. Tate got 30-27 scores from all three judges for her fourth consecutive victory.

Though she had the bulk of the United Center crowd behind her, Tate was tentative in the opening minutes of the fight. Eye peppered her with combos every time she tried to close the distance. But Tate changed the course of the fight with a huge right hand to the jaw which dropped Eye to the mat. Tate sealed the round on the ground, as she moved into side control and landed several elbows to the head.

Eye kept her hands too low during the second round, and Tate took advantage, popping her in the jaw on several occasions. She scored another knockdown, landed hammer fists, went to the ground, and worked for submissions up until the horn.

The pace was last frenetic in the third, but Tate scored a takedown midway through, continued to push the pace after they were stood up, and Eye was never able to do anything to turn the fight in her favor.

Eye (11-3, 1 NC) lost for the second time in her past three fights.

CHICAGO -- Given both fighters' track records, the UFC on FOX 16 lightweight battle between Edson Barboza and Paul Felder promised excitement.

And excitement was indeed delivered.

The two engaged in a wild dance of spinning strikes, with both fighters seemingly determined to deliver a wild knockout.

In the end, though, Barboza's a bit more experienced at this level, and showed a bit more poise when it counted most. He earned an across-the-board, 29-28 victory in a fight which wowed the United Center crowd.

"It was a great victory," said Barboza (16-3), who won for the third time in his past four fights. "He was a very, very tough guy."

The two started throwing spinning strikes from the outset, which led to an odd exchange in the middle of the opening round. Barboza landed a spinning back fist in which his forearm connected with Felder's head, Felder, acknowledged it, and they touched gloves. Barboza then landed a nasty spinning back kick to to the groin, which brought the fight to a halt for awhile.

The bout continued, as the two spent two fast-paced rounds trading brutal body kicks and came back for more. Both fighters continued to try to finish the bout with a knockout of the year, and both just missed on several occasions.

Barboza dictated the pace in the final round as Felder (10-1) who proved he can hang at an elite level, couldn't quite land like he did over the first two rounds.

"I worked hard for this fight," said Barboza. "He's very very good, but I train with some of the best in the world."

CHICAGO -- Takanori Gomi didn't seem inclined to tap, even as Joe Lauzon rained down brutal punches from the top. Herb Dean, for whatever reason, sat there watching Gomi while the uncontested punches rained down.

So Lauzon, who considered the former PRIDE lightweight champion one of his idols as he was breaking into the business, got up and walked away. Dean had a conversation with the woozy Gomi, then called the fight off, giving Lauzon a TKO victory at 2:53 of the opening round of their UFC on FOX 16 bout Saturday at United Center.

"He was completely unconscious, it was the right thing to do," said Lauzon (25-10), who had his 24th career stoppage win. "I could have kept hitting him with punches, there was no point in it, the guy's one of my heroes."

Lauzon had walked right through a Gomi left to score the takedown, worked for several submissions, and finally mounted Gomi's back, where he reeled off a string of uncontested punches.

"He's legend of the sport, one of the guys I idolized in high school and college," Lauzon said. "It's kind of crappy beating on one of your heroes but that's the way he did."

Gomi (35-11, 1 NC), has dropped two straight and three out of four.

CHICAGO -- For five minutes, Tom Lawlor simply looked like a fighter who had been out of the cage for more than two years.

Then, in the blink of an eye, he was a winner.

Lawlor dropped a charging Gian Villante with a crisp straight right hook to the jaw on Saturday night, putting a quick and surprising to their UFC on FOX 16 light heavyweight bout at United Center. The time of the stoppage on the knockout was the 27-second mark of the second round.

Lawlor (10-5, 1 NC), who was known as much for his zany walkouts as his action in the cage over the years, said he's getting series as he hits his mid-30s.

"For the past seven years everyone in the UFC thinks I'm a joke," Lawlor said. "Now I'm stepping up in weight to 205, and now the joke's on the 205 division."

Villante (13-6) dictated the tempo in the opening round, peppering Lawlor with leg kicks and keeping him from getting his offense untracked. He made his fatal mistake in the second, though, as he wildly charged at Lawlor and got tagged.

Lawlor, who spent most of his career at middleweight, says he's going to stay at 205.

"I'm getting to old for this stuff," Lawlor said. "It's time to make a run at 205. Watch out."

CHICAGO -- Hardcore fans anticipated someone was going to take home a limb as a trophy from the UFC on FOX 16 welterweight showdown Kenny Robertson and Ben Saunders. Both guys, after all, are known for their ability to pull rare submissions out of nowhere.

Instead, fans were treated to a slam-bang slobberknocker. In a bout in which you never knew what, exactly, one fighter was going to throw, nor how the other would counter.

In the end, the judges felt Saunders did just a bit more to win, as he took two out of three 29-28 scores for a split decision.

The tone was set from the outset, as Saunders brutalized Robertson with body kicks and Robertson responded. The duo traded elbows, kicks, combos of punches, from range and in close, with Robertson mainly getting the best of things, but neither fighter backing down. Robertson dropped Saunders late with a right to the jaw, but couldn't capitalize.

The standup chess match continued in round two, As Saunders landed more body kicks and Robertson responded by closing the distance and landing punches and elbows. The pace noticeably slowed following a timeout for an accidentally Saunders low kick on Robertson, but the pace picked up again late as the two once again traded blows.

In the third, finally, we saw more of the ground work expected from the bout. Saunders scored a trip just over a minute into the round, worked Robertson into a triangle, and held it for the duration of the round. He bloodied Robertson with elbows, but Saunders managed to hang on and get the decision.

Saunders (19-6-2) has won three in a row, while Robertson (15-4) had a three-fight win streak snapped.

CHICAGO -- Eddie Wineland treated his UFC on FOX 16 bout with Bryan Caraway like a grudge fight.

He was unhappy that Caraway called him out on television last year, right after Wineland suffered a broken jaw; he talked trash all week long, and he glared at his opponent throughout the introduction to their bantamweight fight at United Center on Saturday.

But Caraway treated it like just another bout, and perhaps the difference in approach was the reason why Caraway coasted to victory. With girlfriend Miesha Tate cornering him just hours before her own fight, Caraway won a unanimous decision, taking a pair of 29-28s and a 30-27 from the judges.

Wineland charged right out at Caraway at the outset, but, in his first fight in more than a year, he seemed a bit gun shy. In a bout which was primarily fought at range, Caraway never quite seemed to get his striking untracked, while Caraway smartly picked his spots, caused damage when he landed, scored with solid countersm and got the better of things in the clinch, as well.

Wineland showed urgency in the third round, picking up the pace and landing more often, but it wasn't enough. The former WEC bantamweight champ dropped to 21-11-1, with losses in three of his last four. Caraway (20-7), conversely, has won three of four.

Phillips was the clear winner in each of the first two rounds, negating Duke's reach by taking the fight to the mat and mixing up ground-and-pound and submission attempts.

Phillips gassed badly in the final round, which Duke dominated. Duke picked Phillips apart in the standup and worked for several submissions on the ground. She had a tight armbar on Phillips in the closing round, but Phillips held on for a draw.

While it appeared the final round was close to a 10-8, which would have forced a draw, the judges all scored the final round 10-9.

The victory was vengeance for Phillips, who was submitted by Duke in the amateur ranks three years ago.

"My plan was to keep moving, land solid strikes, and win the fight," said Phillips (5-3), who is now 1-2 in the UFC.

Duke (3-3, 1 NC) has lost three in a row, Baszler has dropped three in a row and Shafir has been knocked out in the opening minute of her past two fights.
