Round 1: Dan Miragliotta will be the ref for the main event here. No touch of gloves. Intense. RDA moves in, and dekes right off, and Pettis throws a high kick -- and another. Neither get past the forearms. RDA returns fire, and initiates with several other body kicks along fence. Wow, RDA, after a body kick, lands a right hand clearly that hurt Pettis. He was rubbing his eye after. RDA came to fight. Big head kick from RDA, and Pettis along fence cowering now returns fire. RDA bringing fight right to him. Leg kick from Pettis, then a little flying knee which lands. Spinning kick from Pettis doesn't land clean. RDA still stalking in, and Pettis counters his pressure with a couple of staple-gun punches -- and another. RDA with a left hook to body, and gets clipped with left hand on the break. Body kick from Pettis. RDA moves in again and initiates; nice combo, then a right hand lands. Pettis on his bike, gets moving. Body kick from RDA, and Pettis counters up top. RDA mixing it up extremely well, coming in from different angles -- high, low. Big uppercut off a combo from Pettis, the RDA slams home a left hand. Crazy pace and pressure from RDA. Now RDA waits for Pettis to throw high and dips in for a takedown, and he gets it on fence. Pettis sitting with back to links, and RDA is trying to scoot him away from there. RDA landing knees, and now arching left hands to his ribs. Pettis able to get to his feet, but he's got RDA riding on his back. RDA lands a couple of big shots as they break. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Rafael dos Anjos, 10-9

Round 2: Pettis' eye is swollen, a little bloody. They exchange in the middle, and RDA backs up. Jab by Pettis, and a big left hand from RDA snaps Pettis' head back. Dos Anjos pushes Petts up to fence, and is looking for takedown with double underhooks. Landing knees in close, as Pettis tries to find space. Big body kick from Pettis, who still got tagged with a counter. They are throwing! Body kick from Dos Anjos, and then they stand and trade in close, with Pettis getting the better shots in. Dos Anjos swoops in for a takedown, and gets it. This time away from fence. He's posturing up and trying to find space in Pettis' guard. Pettis ties RDA's arms up and is keeping his arms locked behind RDA's head. Dos Anjos postures with his elbows providing the thrust, and he's now landing some ground and pound -- left hands. Pettis has now managed to squirm to the fence, but RDA is still on him, landing shots. There's an elbow. Pettis fishing for a submission, but can't get aligned on the Cordeiro protege. Pettis landing hammerfist from the bottom, but there's not a lot behind them. Dos Anjos now on his feet and landing big shots on the supine Pettis, before he collapses on him again and lands another. Round ends with Pettis fending off the aggressive challenger. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Dos Anjos, 10-9 (20-18 overall for RDA)

Round 3: RDA with a body kick, and Pettis whips a return. Still, RDA is initiating the exchange. He comes in and lands another body shot, and gets out of the way of the counter. Looks like Dos Anjos got poked in the eye, and Dan Miragliotta calls time. They are back. Pettis with nice exchange, and then he follows up with huge head kick! RDA shakes it off and lands a counter, and then throws a head kick of his own (mostly blocked). Crazy action, as Pettis back pedals around the cage. Just as Pettis looks to get his range, Dos Anjos shoots in for a takedown, and once again, scores it. Starting to look pretty bleak for the lightweight champion. RDA postures, as Pettis for a moment grabs his arm for a possible sub. Pettis able to climb back to his feet, but he looks like he's having his gas tank siphoned. They stay in clinch, and RDA lands a couple. As they separate, Pettis scores wit ha nice combo -- but the aggressor is still Dos Anjos, who peppers Pettis with some chin music, and then takes him right back down. Pettis with his back to the fence, and he looks up at the clock, almost astonished. He gets up, and for his labor, gets tackled again. Some blood coming out of Dos Anjos' nose. Dos Anjos grabs Pettis's back as the champ swivels, and he lands a couple of intense hammerfists at the bell. MMA Fighting scores R3 for Dos Anjos, 10-9 (30-27 overall for RDA)

Round 4: Pettis snaps an uppercut off an exchange, but then warily backs up sensing a takedown. RDA doesn't do it, though, and instead lands a left to the body over the top. Big kick to the body from Pettis; these guys are pulverizing each other's rib cages. RDA comes in again for a takedown, and Pettis just simple can't resist him. Down he goes. RDA is working, and nearly got reversed that. But RDA coolly spins back to the top, and he's in side control. Dos Anjos looking for a kimura, and he is in full prying mode. Pettis fighting to hold on, using his other hand to hold the left on its moorings. Pettis finally able to break free of it, and crowd lets up a roar. But Dos Anjos has Pettis' back, and as RDA goes for a rear nakes, Pettis reverses. He stands and takes RDA back down. Can't stay there, but some life from Pettis. He has RDA on fence, and he's using his force to push him on links. Knees from RDA in close, but Pettis is leaning in. RDA spins him around, and down he goes. RDA turns and has Pettis ragdolled on fence, where he slips him back to mat helplessly. That's where the round is going to end, with Dos Anjos landing a big knee in the scramble, and Pettis wondering what hit him. MMA Fighting scores R4 for Dos Anjos, 10-9 (40-36 overall for Dos Anjos)

Round 5: Flying knee from Pettis to start the fifth. He still wants spectacular. RDA has landed 117 significant strikes, and he attacks the lead leg. They exchange body kicks, and as soon as they do, RDA leans his hulk into Pettis' body and drives him back into fence, cutting off the range. Suffocating. But they break, and Pettis lands a push kick. Forget that, RDA roves back into Pettis orbit and smashes him to the mat. Pettis nearly powerless to stop this, as RDA is in side control. Elbows from side control for the Brazilian, and Pettis scrambles to his knees. Problem is he gives up his back, even as he gets to his feet. Now along fence, and Pettis escapes the proximity...for the moment. Pettis trying to paste RDA from range, and he's landing, but each time he does RDA takes him down -- and that's just what happened. His ninth takedown in ten attempts. RDA postures back up, using his knee on Pettis' chest. Pettis just with no answer, and can't do anything off his back. Though here he is trying to snatch RDA's arm, looking for a finish, but with the sweat he slips off. RDA grabs Pettis' back and has the body triangle. Now he's flattening him out and trying to finish as the ten-second clacks sound. Pettis fends him off, but that's it...we will have a new lightweight champ. MMA Fighting scores R5 for Dos Anjos, 10-9 (50-45 overall for Dos Anjos)

UFC 185 official results: Rafael dos Anjos def.
Brazil's Rafael dos Anjos was practically an afterthought heading into his title challenge against UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis on Saturday night in Dallas.

Nevermind that dos Anjos had won eight of his past nine fights, including a knockout victory over former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson.

No, all the talk heading in was about Pettis and whether he was on his way to consideration for the top pound-for-pound spot.

At UFC 185, dos Anjos provided yet another reminder of why mixed martial arts is the most unpredictable of sports. Dos Anjos stunned the MMA world by dominating Pettis from bell to bell.

The Rafael Cordeiro-trained fighter won the title shocking fashion, taking the belt on across-the-board scores of 50-45.

"I knew I was going to win before this fight happened," dos Anjos said. "I'm an MMA fighter. I'm a striker. I'm a jiu-jitsu black belt. I work hard on my wrestling. MMA fights, I'm the best in the world."

Dos Anjos (24-7) surprised Pettis with his hand speed, cracking him with crisps lefts and rights. The challenger took a page out of the playbook of Clay Guida, who had handed Pettis his only previous UFC defeat, by staying in his face and pressuring him throughout the fight.

The challenger was relentless in his pursuit, mixing up his strikes, closing the distance, outgrappling Pettis, and taking him to the ground at will. As the rounds wore on, Pettis never seemed to have an answer.

In the fourth, dos Anjos got Pettis into deep trouble with a Kimura, but the champ powered out. After the round, Pettis told trainer Duke Roufus he couldn't see out of his right eye.

Pettis needed a finish in round five, but there was no Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen 1 moment on tap, as RDA fought a disciplined round and sealed the fight.

With the victory, dos Anjos become the 11th Brazilian champion in UFC history, and the first Brazilian lightweight champ.

It was an amazing turn of events for a fighter who lost his first two UFC fights when he debuted in the company in 2008.

"I come from the bottom, I couldn't imagine in my whole life being here in the main event and becoming the new champion," dos Anjos said.

For his part, Pettis made no excuses for his defeat.

"He caught me with a left hand in the first round, first punch he threw in the fight, I couldn't see the rest of the fight. No excuses, I'm going back to work.."

Two years after adding women to the roster, the UFC had its first women's title change.

Joanna Jędrzejczyk dominated Carla Esparza on Saturday night at UFC 185, claiming the UFC strawweight championship in Dallas. The time of the TKO stoppage was 4:17 of the second round.

"I was training so hard for her," said Jędrzejczyk (9-0), a native of Poland. "No one believed in my grappling. I am in UFC. I am a complete grappler and striker. No one is going to take this belt from me.

Esparza (10-3) comes from a collegiate wrestling background. But the Redondo Beach, Calif., resident found her wrestling stymied, and didn't seem to have a Plan B.

Jędrzejczyk stuffed seven of Esparza's eight takedown attempts in the fight. As she gained confidence, the challenger began to absolutely pick Esparza apart in the standup, using crisp and accurate striking.

Esparza tired and dropped her hands as the fight went on, which only hastened the finish, which came late in the second round.

Esparza, the former Invicta 115-pound champion, became the first UFC strawweight titleholder in December, when she defeated Rose Namajunas in the finals of the TUF tournament. That became the second women's division in the UFC, after bantamweight, a championship Ronda Rousey has held since it was introduced into the company.

For her part, Esparza, who had a five-fight win streak snapped, was a class act in defeat.

"I can't take anything away from her, she was amazing tonight," Esparza said. "I can't make any excuses, it wasn't my night. She fought a great fight and she earned it."

Johny Hendricks wanted to make a point on Saturday night.

He had looked sluggish in his razor-thin UFC welterweight title loss to Robbie Lawler in December, and he vowed to change his approach. Hendricks (17-3) said he wasn't going to let himself get out of shape between fights, then look like a renewed fight next time out.

Point proven.

In front of an adoring hometown crowd in Dallas, Hendricks demonstrated he remains every bit a top contender to the belt he once held. Hendricks overwhelmed Matt Brown and got back into the win column with a unanimous decision at UFC 185.

Hendricks looked in tip-top condition and was energetic from the get-go, as he took Brown (19-13) down at will, scoring seven takedowns altogether in the fight, in spite of several blatant fence grabs by the Cincinnati native.

Hendricks got the best of things in the standup, unleashing his lethal left hands, and got in a fair bit of ground and pound when the fight hit the floor.

More Coverage: UFC 185 Results | UFC news
Download MMA Fighting iPhone App

In the closing round, a desperate Brown worked for submissions from the bottom, but it was too little, too late.

Hendricks, for his part, was his own worst critic.

"That wasn't a good fight," said Hendricks, who had 11:26 of control time in the bout. "I just can't figure it out. Matt Brown is tough, but i feel like I had him in the first round, second round."

Hendricks will wait on the winner of the Lawler-Rory MacDonald fight, expecting to get the next title shot.

"That title is mine, whoever wins, I want one of them. I'm gonna fight him and I'm gonna win."

Alistair Overeem had much to prove on Saturday night.

The former Strikeforce and Dream champion was facing another heavy-handed veteran heavyweight in Roy Nelson at UFC 185, with both in need of a statement win.

Having flailed into knockout losses in three of his past five fights, Overeem looked like a fighter renewed in Dallas. "The Reem" was patient, picked his spots, respected Nelson's power, and got out of a couple of serious predicaments en route to a unanimous decision victory.

The judges' scores were 30-27 across the board as Overeem won for the third time in four fights and stayed relevant in the heavyweight division.

"I'm not done yet," said Overeem (29-14, 1 NC). "I'm 34 years old and I'm coming for that belt. Cain or Werdum, I'm coming for you bros."

Overeem set the tone early, as he waited for his opportunities, then landed heavy strikes. These included big running knees and a series of kicks which left Nelson's left side bright red before the first round was out.

Nelson, of course, is known for his brutal knockout power. He demonstrated his heavy hands with a big right in the second round which nearly knocked out Overeem's mouthpiece, and a left hand late which scored a knockdown.

But Nelson, who turns 39 in a few months, didn't have the energy to follow up, and Overeem was always able to scamper to safety.

"I know Roy was a dangerous opponent, very dangerous with knockout power in every punch," Overeem said. "And that's why I had to finish this fight a little different. He is very dangerous and this is why I had to be on my toes every second of every round."

Nelson (20-11) has dropped two straight and four of his past five.

If these are Henry Cejudo's capabilities when he makes the 125-pound limit, we might be looking at a potential contender to Demetrious Johnson's flyweight title.

"I won gold in 2008, and I want gold in the UFC," said Cariaso (8-0).

Cejudo made it look easy against veteran Chris Cariaso (17-7) on Saturday night at UFC 186 in Dallas. Cejudo dominated all aspects of the fight to earn a unanimous decision victory, on scores of 30-27 across the board.

The 2008 Olympic wrestling gold medalist, had to pull out of his planned UFC debut against Scott Jorgensen at UFC 177 after a weight cut gone awry.
Saturday, he proved what he could do if given such a chance. Cejudo used crisp striking and effortlessly landed a half-dozen takedowns over the course of the fight. Cariaso, coming off a loss to Johnson at UFC 178, was game, but could never get on track.

While by all counts the showing was impressive, Cejudo himself didn't seem too pleased with his handiwork.

"I'm fatigued a little bit," he said. "I put myself at a very high standard. It is what it is. I want to knock someone out."

After the dominating the first round of his flyweight return Saturday, Sergio Pettis was all but declared the next contender to Demetrious Johnson's title by commentators from Twitter to the broadcast booth.

But then Ryan Benoit had something to say about it.

Benoit stopped Pettis in his tracks at UFC 185, rocking his opponent with a monster left to the jaw and following up with a vicious ground-and-pound flurry. The Dallas-based fighter won TKO at 1:34 of the second round in front of his hometown fans.

After the fight was waved off, though, Benoit turned much of the crowd against him by giving Pettis a literal kick in the ass. Benoit apologized profusely afterwards.

"I gotta say I'm sorry real quick," said Benoit (8-3). "I haven't fought in 16 months, the only thing I can say is I got really into the fight, really hyped, and I know I was way behind in the fight."

Pettis (12-2), the younger brother of lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, went 3-1 in the UFC at bantamweight before making the drop back down to 125. Pettis put on a ferocious display over the opening round, dominating the standup with swift strikes and showing smooth work on the ground.

It appeared to be more of the same in round two before the duo fired off left hands and Benoit's landed a split second sooner, changing the fight's trajectory in a heartbeat.

"I just knocked out Sergio Pettis in my hometown," said Benoit. "I know it was wrong. I got zoned in, I had my tunnel vision on, all I can say is I'm sorry."

Joseph Duffy let everyone in Dallas know leading up to UFC 185 that he doesn't want to be known only as "the last man to defeat Conor McGregor."

Then he went out and did something about it. The former pro boxer from Donegal, Ireland, put on an impressive striking display as he made short work of Jake Lindsey in his UFC debut on Saturday night.

The time of the TKO was 1:47 of the first round as the lightweight Duffy improved to 12-1.

"I feel good," Duffy said after his 11th career finish. "This is only the beginning."

Duffy looked confident with his boxing, as he kept Lindsey (9-3) at bay in the early going. He then connected on a sneaky left-footed head kick, followed by a pair of body punches, which dropped Lindsey to the mat. Herb Dean stopped the onslaught soon thereafter.

Duffy submitted Irish superstar McGregor in just 38 seconds in a 2010 Cage Warriors bout. That came one fight after a submission win over TUF:Smashes winner Norman Parke. Duffy took a three-year MMA sabbatical to compete in pro boxing before returning to MMA last year.
