When the heavyweight main event between Antonio Silva and Mark Hunt was announced for UFC Fight Night 33, it was generally met with approval.

It figured to be a fun fight. It figured to be a slugfest while it lasted. But anyone who tells you that they were expecting an otherworldly 25-minute brawl is probably a liar.

In a 2013 already filled with exciting matchups which would run away with Fight of the Year in any other year, "Bigfoot" and Hunt put on a jaw-dropping display of heart and toughness Friday night in Brisbane, Australia. The fight was so evenly contested and back-and-forth that few complained when the judges handed out a majority draw. Two judges scored the fight 47-47, while another had it 48-47 for Hunt.

The first two rounds were a feeling-out process. Silva looked like he wasn't going to be goaded into a slugfest with the hard-hitting Hunt. He stayed out of Hunt's range for the most part, covered up when Hunt charged in, and picked his spots with his own strikes. Silva mixed up punches, body kicks, and postively brutal leg kicks.

Business picked up in round three. Defying all expectations, Hunt scored a takedown. Silva got up, but then Hunt landed a ferocious straight right hand right on the button and dropped Silva backwards. he followed up and landed a series of brutal elbows to the grounded fighter.

As exciting as round three was, though, it was merely an appetizer to an insane round four. In one of the most memorable five-minute sets you'll ever see, Silva turned up the heat, only to get caught with a counter and then taken down by Hunt after three attempts. When Silva got up, Hunt pursued him and landed standing elbows. But then Silva, somehow, found a second wind, landing a gigantic knee in the clinch. Silva followed up with blow after blow, but couldn't put away the ultra-tough Hunt.

The pair embraced before the start of round five, then got right back to their brutal business. Hunt continued to pick Silva apart in the standup and opened a huge cut. With Silva wobbling, referee Steve Perceval did Silva a favor and called a time-out to check the cut. The enabled Silva to regain his bearings. The doctor cleared him to continue. The fight continued, with both exhausted fighters throwing strikes right up until the final horn.

"To all the fans, to my team, thank you so much," said Hunt (9-8-1).

For his part, Silva said he suffered a back injury in training, but fought anyway.

"I'm so happy," said Silva (18-5-1) but a few weeks ago I injured my back, I don't say anything, I come here to fight and I do my best today.

Not long after the bout's conclusion, the UFC named the bout Fight of the Night.

All throughout the week, the chatter was relentless: Was this it for mixed martial arts legend Mauricio "Shogun" Rua? Would the former UFC light heavyweight champion have to call it a career after meeting James Te Huna in Brisbane, Australia?

One vicious counter jab stopped all that talk cold. And Te Huna, as well.

In one of the year's most memorable knockouts, Rua slipped a Te Huna left and dropped him cold with a short left hand to the jaw.

Te Huna dropped to the mat on the spot. Rua went in for, and missed a big follow-up bomb, but it was all for the best, as Te Huna was out.

The fight was stopped at 1:03 of the first round.

In his post-fight interview, 'Shogun' was gracious to his fallen foe.

"James Te Huna is a good fighter and a very strong fighter," Rua (22-8) said through an interpreter. "I knew he'd come at me aggressively so I timed his engagement and it worked out good for me."

Rua snapped a two-fight losing streak with his victory. Te Huna (16-7) suffered his second consecutive defeat.

The 36-year-old wasted no time scoring a takedown. From there, he simply overpowered Barry and opened up a frightening ground-and-pound beatdown. The bout was waved off at the 2:09 mark of the first round.

After the fight, Barry got up, walked several feet, and then fell face-first to the mat. He left the cage under his own power.

"This was one for Australia, whoo!" an excited Palelei told the crowd.

Palelei improved to 20-4 with his 16th career knockout. He's won 10 straight fights. Barry (15-6) lost for the third time in his past four bouts.

The fight went into the books as a TKO victory for Hester over his former Ultimate Fighter 17 teammate in Brisbane, Australia.

Up until that point, it was an entertaining scrap. Hester, who was the first pick of Team Jones on TUF 17, came out swinging and cracked Andrews several times. But Andrews, the team's final pick, rallied late and scored a pair of takedowns to likely steal the round.

Hester got his bearing back in round two, winning the round both standing and on the ground. But the end came with Andrews threw a right hand and had it deflected by Hester in a way which clearly dislocated Andrews' shoulder. While he was game in finishing the round, he was in no condition to continue.

Hester improved to 9-3 with is fifth straight win; Andrews dropped to 17-5 with one no-contest and had a six-fight win streak snapped.

Both fighters were active in round one, which was contested almost entirely standing. Correia landed the heavier shots, though, including a pair of big left hooks. Round two was more of the same, with the volume of striking turned up a notch. Once again, though, Correia landed more often.

Greg Jackson told Kedzie after round two that she was up 2-0 on the scorecards, which was questionable, but either way, Kedzie noticeably had extra spring in her step in round three. Still, Correia appeared to get the best of it, including a trip and an attempt to move into position for a submission.

The 30-year-old Correia, who was making her UFC debut, improved to 7-0, with six decision wins. Kedzie dropped to 16-13 and 0-2 in the UFC.

Once upon a time, Takeya Mizugaki was a fighter who earned respect for his fighting spirit, but seemed to lose as many fights as he won.

The Kanagawa, Japan native still brings it every time he steps into the Octagon. But now he's winning most of his fights.

In a solid standup battle at UFC Fight Night 33, Mizugaki took it to Nam Phan over the first two rounds in Brisbane, Australia. Then he held off a furious Phan rally in round three to take a unanimous decision in his bantamweight bout. The judges' scores were 29-28, 29-28, and 30-28.

That marked four straight wins for Mizugaki (19-7-2) and five in his past six fights.

In the opening round, Mizugaki looked sharp, mixing up his strikes and landing his punches to both the head and the body. In round two, Mizugaki connect on a huge left and opened up a gigantic flurry of punches. Phan not only managed to withstand the barrage, but stayed on his feet the entire time.

After the second round, Phan's corner pointedly told him his career was on the line. Phan fought liked it, as he took the third round convincingly by rocking Mizugaki on several occasions. He couldn't get the finish he needed, but given the UFC's propensity to reward fighters who put on exciting fights, Phan just may have earned himself another chance.

Phan dropped to 18-12, with three losses in his past four fights.

Another weekend, another UFC card, although this one has some promise and intriguing bouts. Most notably, the main event features two talented heavyweights who've fallen short of the true upper echelon of the division, but can get a big boost with a win at this event. The rest of the card also has rising prospects in both the men's and women's divisions as well as proven veterans who are in must-win situations.

Will Mark Hunt make one last run at a title? Is this the end of the road for Shogun Rua? I answer these questions and more with my predictions for Friday's fights.

What: UFC Fight Night 33: Hunt vs. Bigfoot

Mark Hunt vs. Antonio Silva

I legitimately have no idea what to expect in this fight. I know Hunt's faithful in the MMA fanbase obviously want to see him do well and believe he'll find a way to pull this off with his crippling power and counter striking edge. I wouldn't say they're wrong. Silva is not the speediest of heavyweight. Should he decide to play to Hunt's strengths, I don't suspect the bout will last long. Yet, Silva has the sizable advantage on the floor both with, well, size as well as skill. Hunt's improved his defensive scrambling, but isn't excruciatingly difficult to hold down.

I'm going to go with Silva given that I'm being forced to pick here. When he wants to, he can level change, secure a double and go to work. He can and should do that here. Will he? It's anyone's guess.

Pick: Silva

Mauricio Rua vs. James Te Huna

Like the rest of you, I was shocked by the loss to Sonnen that Shogun suffered in August. Even writing it sounds bizarre, but it's unavoidably true. That loss, and truthfully some others, have raised questions about Rua's time left in the game, at least as a relevant light heavyweight. And they're fair, as painful as they may be to entertain them.

Rua's been sporadic in performance while still on a general decline. He looked not so great about Brandon Vera in a win, but decent to good in a loss to Alexander Gustafsson. The difference maker for me in this fight with Te Huna is the Kiwi's relative 'freshness'. That is, while he's a bezerker, too, he's not as shop worn as Rua. He's not as talented as Rua and can get blasted out or submitted in his recklessness, but his proactive push is probably going to be enough to win the day.

Pick: Te Huna

Ryan Bader vs. Anthony Perosh

What a dangerous fight for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) veteran. A loss to Perosh could permanently label him a non-contender if he isn't already in that space. He shouldn't lose to Perosh considering his superior wrestling, athleticism, top control and power punching, but he might. Perosh is sneaky and patient in finding offensive openings. An overly aggressive or overly cautious Bader is likely to get finished.

Pick: Bader

Pat Barry vs. Soa Palelei

This seems fairly straight forward. Barry's got his wrestling and jiu-jitsu challenges, but he should have enough time to work Palelei over if not in the first round, then certainly in the second.

Pick: Barry

Dylan Andrews vs. Clint Hester

I'm going to side with Andrews here, but I've been reasonably impressed by Hester's offensive creativity, most notably (if not exclusively) in the striking department. Where he goes from there, well, we'll find out in this fight. And Andrews, despite incessantly being counted out, finds ways to win bouts. I'm going to side with the more proven of the two, but Hester could make a lot of noise with a with on this card.

Pick: Andrews

Julie Kedzie vs. Bethe Correia

Kedzie's record is and isn't indicative of the kind of fighter she is. She's plenty capable of hanging with the best in the division, at least for a while, before what appears to be a loss of focus does her in. Still, the point is that as interesting a prospect as Correia is, I'm not yet convinced she has the striking-to-submission blended skill set required to put Kedzie away or win two decisive rounds.

Pick: Kedzie

From the preliminary card:
