As far as Demetrious Johnson was concerned, the scouting report on John Dodson was to take him into deep waters, sure that Dodson could not carry his explosiveness into the final moments of a tense fight. And as the UFC on FOX 6 flyweight title bout began, it soon became clear that Johnson would have to be right. As Dodson got off to a strong start, Johnson's room for error narrowed until there was almost none left.

When Johnson was knocked down in the second, his challenge grew. But slowly, the tide turned. The spring in Johnson's legs lessened, and the explosion on his punches flattened to a lesser pop. And that was Johnson's time to take over. Time to shine.

Those final 10 minutes -- the "championship rounds" -- were all his. Johnson is one of the rarest breeds in fight sports who can fight at maximum RPMs from beginning to end. And when Dodson couldn't keep up, Johnson took total control.

Battering Dodson from the clinch with knees to the head and body, Johnson dominated the fourth and fifth rounds, and captured a unanimous decision at the United Center in Chicago.

After a close opening three rounds, the fourth and fifth went like this: Johnson landed 117 strikes, and Dodson managed just 28. There was a bit of controversy involved, as an illegal strike by Johnson against Dodson while he was in a three-point stance could have led to a point deduction, but referee John McCarthy decided against it.

All of the action from that point on was a sea change from what came before, when Dodson looked settled in and fully capable of handling Johnson's speed. From the opening bell, Dodson (15-5) ran out to the center of the cage and proceeded to land sharp strikes as Johnson attempted to move into striking range. It culminated in a left cross that briefly dropped Johnson. That was Dodson's best opportunity of the night, and he lied in wait, trying to land the finishing blow. He landed another big left about 20 seconds later, but Johnson was able to hang on, and he recovered brilliantly between rounds.

All three judges scored the final three rounds for the champion.

"I got dazed a little but I'm in great shape," said Johnson, whose first title defense made him 17-2-1. "It''s going to happen. it's like going swimming; you're going to get splashed."

Within 60 seconds, Johnson was back with the same quick footwork that marks his style, and Dodson soon began to fade. Johnson's pressure offense, particularly from the clinch, sealed his win.

If it is the end for Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in the UFC, it mostly came on his terms, in a fight that mostly followed the style he preferred. Despite the fact that he and Glover Teixeira spent most of the three rounds standing up and trading strikes, it did not go Jackson's way.

Teixeira landed the fight's most impactful strikes, and peppered in occasional takedowns to win a unanimous decision in the UFC on FOX 6 co-main event. The judges scored it 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Teixeira came out living up to his promise of standing with Rampage, content to engage in exchanges. About midway through, Teixeira landed a takedown and got Jackson's back. Jackson worked free, but once he got back to his feet, he found that Teixeira's striking is legit. The Brazilian wobbled Jackson with a left hook, then scored with the same punch moments later. He stalked him for the final 30 seconds of the round but couldn't get the finish.

It was one of several dominant moments Teixeira had in the fight. He was 5-for-5 in takedowns, passed Jackson's guard five times and had full mount in the fight's final seconds. He closed it out from that position, with a series of elbows and punches to the final horn.

The fight was the last on Jackson's UFC contract, and he has said multiple times that he plans to the leave the promotion after a rocky six-year alliance. Overall, he fought 12 times for the UFC, with a record of 7-5 during a run that was highlighted by his unification of the UFC and PRIDE 205-pound championship.

Jackson, now 32-11, will head to free agency while Teixeira rockets upward in the UFC's light-heavyweight division. With his 18th straight victory, he's now 20-2.

Anthony Pettis said it was personal. He said Donald Cerrone would pay for antagonizing him. He said he was going to make a statement. Every word out of his mouth was backed up at Saturday night's UFC on FOX 6 fight. Pettis fought like a man possessed, punishing Cerrone with a vast array of standing strikes.

He switched stances, he punched, he kicked, and he finished.

Pettis crumpled Cerrone with a vicious body kick and then added a couple of cursory ground strikes for the finish at 2:35 of the first round.

Basically, it was Showtime for "Showtime."

"I knew I was going to finish him," he said afterward. "Donald called me out. He shouldn't have done that. I ain't scared of anyone. I want that belt ASAP."

Pettis (16-2) landed several significant strikes despite the limited fight time. His first strike of the fight was a right cross that found its mark, and he was off to the races. He changed planes going from the legs to the head and then the body, and just when Cerrone seemed to settle in, Pettis confused him further by switching stances to southpaw.

From there, Pettis landed a kick to the body that hurt Cerrone. Moments later, he followed up with an ever harder kick to the same spot, and two punches later, it was a wrap, marking the first time Cerrone had ever been knocked out as Pettis made his case for the lightweight division's No. 1 contender spot.

"Dana, what do I have to do to get that title shot?" he said.

He might have done enough.

T.J. Grant is ready to announce himself as a lightweight contender. Since moving down to the UFC's 155-pound division, Grant has looked fantastic, and his Saturday night UFC on FOX 6 performance was his best yet.

Facing the surging Matt Wiman, Grant rolled, hurting him early with a right hand, and finishing him late in the first round with a knockout at 4:51.

The final sequence came after Grant rocked him and floored him with a pair of elbows against the cage. He followed up with strikes on the ground for the finish.

It is an undeniable truth that in mixed martial arts, takedowns win fights.

Saturday night's UFC on FOX 6 match between Clay Guida and Hatsu Hioki can serve as another example of that, as Guida used his wrestling to dictate the fight's location but did little else. Despite Hioki threatening with submissions and landing the fight's most significant strike, the judges awarded the bout to Guida.

The final result was a split decision, with scores of 30-27, 29-28, 28-29.

Guida had trouble finding Hioki from the get-go, unable to navigate the five-inch reach differential. Hioki timed Guida's rushes and landed jabs and uppercuts in the first round. Guida scored a takedown with 90 seconds left in the round but couldn't hold Hioki down.

Guida decided to take striking out of the equation in the second and managed to take Hioki down with an early big slam. But Hioki spent a large portion of the round threatening with submissions, and Guida landed little of any substance. When the referee finally stood them up in the final 30 seconds, Hioki landed a thudding head kick.

Guida spent most of the third round on top as well, but aside from a few short right hands, he spent big portions of the frame working his way out of potential submission attempts.

Apparently, that was enough for two of the three judges, who awarded him the fight.

The win in his featherweight debut made Guida 30-13, while hard-luck loser Hioki dropped his second straight to fall to 26-6-2.

Ryan Bader came into UFC on FOX 6 as the biggest betting favorite on the card, with the final line closing on Bader as a 5-to-1 favorite. He performed like it.

Bader scored the fastest submission win in the history of the UFC's light-heavyweight division, needing just 50 seconds to submit Vladimir Matyushenko. Amazingly, it was the first time in the 42-year-old Matyushenko's career he had ever been forced to tap, and it came on a unique move, which can best be described as a modified arm-triangle from the bottom while locking down Matyushenko's right leg to keep him from escaping.

"I've been working on it all camp," Bader said. "I trapped the arm and I ended up getting it."

Bader got to that position with his striking, flooring his opponent with a lunging left hook 30 seconds into the fight. He tried the unique sub, then repositioned his hands and closed it out.

Four months after becoming the inaugural UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson sets about the goal of defending the title. But there is also another consideration, one that forces upon him the responsibility of a building block. For the long-term health of the flyweights, he must be one of those that helps establish the momentum of the division. At UFC 152, in their biggest showcase to date, Johnson and Joseph Benavidez went five hard rounds, but could not win over the 16,800 in attendance who liberally serenaded them with boos through the duration of the 25-minute bout. As fan unrest goes, it was a curious choice. Johnson landed 96 strikes, scored five takedowns and marked up his opponent's face with bruises and swelling. Benavidez tried to mount a late comeback. It still wasn't enough.

The backlash enraged UFC president Dana White, who said he was "horrified" by the reaction and advised fans who jeered them to never buy another UFC pay-per-view.

This time though, the fans that watch on television won't have to spend a dime to watch the 125-pounders. The fight takes place at UFC on FOX 6, and as the main event, no less. That's a promotion for Johnson, but it's also a lot of other things. It's added attention. It's extra scrutiny. It's the eyeballs of mainstream sports fans channel surfing on a Saturday night.

Despite it all, Johnson (16-2-1) is considered just over a 2-to-1 favorite to retain the belt.

The 5-foot-3 dynamo reached his division's apex with a diverse set of skills and an innate ability to adapt. A true mixed martial artist, he does everything fairly well. He strikes at a 49 percent accuracy clip. He doesn't leave himself open to counters. He has managed to take down nearly every opponent he's faced.

The base for Johnson's success stems from his speed and stamina. The two attributes work in concert, allowing him to be always at least a half-step ahead of everyone else, and that means he can get inside to punch or kick or initiate a clinch or a takedown with a split-second of impunity.

In fact, in Johnson's nine UFC fights, he's only been out-landed a single time, and that was when he was fighting as a blown-up bantamweight, and against UFC champion Dominick Cruz. And despite that, Cruz managed to out-land him by only a single strike, 146-145.

At his new home, he can play the matador, or he can play the bull. Never was that better exhibited than in his fight with Benavidez, who most had penciled in as the likely flyweight tournament winner from the start. Johnson confounded Benavidez with his constant movement, feints and level changes. When Benavidez hung back, Johnson could get inside to land a combo and then get out before the counter-bomb came his way. When Benavidez tried to initiate, Johnson could duck low for the takedown. It was ultimately ruled a split-decision, though most of the media saw it much more conclusively in Johnson's favor.

So Johnson can approach this fight in the same freestyle fashion he usually does. His game features everything but power. As fate has it, that's one thing that his opponent John Dodson (14-5) can boast.

How the challenger approaches the fight is much more important than how Johnson does. That's because Dodson, as a power puncher, is prone to fighting with a more defined strategy. Dodson likes to stand at distance and wait for his opponents come to him. The southpaw may be Johnson's equal in speed -- there's no way to know for sure until Saturday -- and he trusts in his ability to reach his opponent's chin before the inverse happens. So far, that's held true as Dodson's won two of his three UFC bouts by knockout, including his most recent against Jussier Formiga.

But it was his other fight, a decision victory over Tim Elliott that left the most questions about his ability to win a five-round bout. Dodson's game didn't hold up over the course of the 15 minutes, and Elliott made it close late. Any such fade against Johnson is likely to swing the fight's momentum.

Dodson mostly performs to let his opponent set the pace, and to time their forward advance with counters. His explosive offense features a crushing straight left, a power right hook, and a plethora of flying knees.

While the aforementioned speed differential will be a factor worth watching, it may not prove to be any more important than whoever can establish the wrestling edge. More specifically, a key battleground will be Johnson's offensive takedown game against Dodson's defense.

Officially, Dodson has not yet been taken down to the mat in his three UFC bouts, although he was taken down during his TUF stint. How he defends in this bout is key as Johnson is able to open up and diversify his offense based on low-level feints.

Ultimately, if you're picking this fight, you have to measure Dodson's ability to land a fight-changing blow against Johnson's unwavering pace. I have my doubts Dodson can land it. His coach Matt Hume once told me that Johnson frequently spars with studs like Rich Franklin and Tim Boetsch, and he's never seen him hurt. If that is the case, Dodson has his work cut out for him. Dodson does have other weapons, of course. He does good work in targeting the body, he'll take aim at the legs with kicks, and with his low center of gravity, he's strong in the clinch.

You may have noticed I didn't address submissions. Frankly speaking, neither of these men have ever been held down for any long period of time, and neither of them have ever tapped out, so I frankly don't expect to see that element decide or even define the fight. Instead, the winner will be made in open space, and with the addition of occasional takedowns that show ownership of the round. To me, that's a formula that screams Demetrious Johnson. Particularly given the fact that Johnson has always been an offensive aggressor, he is more likely to land punches in bunches, and that's a judge-friendly formula. Johnson via unanimous decision.
