A highly anticipated bantamweight title fight between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling has been scrapped from UFC 256 on Dec. 12 in Las Vegas.

Sources close to the situation confirmed to MMA Fighting on Sunday that the bout was no longer taking place at the December pay-per-view with plans to reschedule the fight for a later date. MMA Island first reported the news.

While details remain sketchy it appears Yan was forced out of the fight due to “personal reasons.” There is hope that Yan vs. Sterling could be rescheduled as early as February but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

UFC 256 previously lost a different title fight when featherweight champion Amanda Nunes was forced out of her planned matchup against Megan Anderson.

The bantamweight title fight falling off UFC 256 also begins to explain the urgency the promotion had in booking two high-profile bouts for the same card in recent days.

After submitting Alex Perez in the UFC 255 main event, flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo agreed to face Brandon Moreno just 21 days later at UFC 256 in December. While the fight hasn’t been finalized, both Figueiredo and Moreno have verbally agreed to the date.

Meanwhile, former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson was also booked for a fight against Charles Oliveira in a high-profile matchup added to UFC 256 in recent days. Ferguson had been asking to compete again this year and ultimately it was Oliveira who accepted the fight on Dec. 12.

It appears now with Yan vs. Sterling scrapped that Figueiredo vs. Moreno will headline UFC 256 with Ferguson vs. Oliveira on tap for the co-main event.

When you read the words "personal reasons", it raises red flags.

Curious to see a little elaboration.

Could maybe just want a little privacy while dealing with w/e issue have at hand for now.

I think it was rose that had couple relatives died in expand of few weeks and listed personal reason why she wasn’t going to compete. I’ll wait and see before making a guess.

Idk. It could be something like a death in the family from covid. I think during the pandemic it’s less of a red flag.

I think if that were the case, he would have announced.

Everyone would have offered support.

Like what?

Thoughts and prayers?

Of course, that’s ol’reliable for most people to show how much they truly care, especially on a social media platform.

Maybe he and his family want some privacy.

Definitely jumping to conclusions IMO.

ALL of you are jumping to conclusions.

We need a jump to conclusions mat

Stat!

Milton style!!!

What conclusion did I jump to?

All I said was a bit of elaboration would be appreciated.

I guess conclusion may not have been the best word.

But raising red flags is a bit much, especially now that we know it was just a visa issue.

98%, Yo!

Don't forget they also moved Usman off this card. UFC is limping to the finish line. They should've listened to Conor lol.

Sucks for Aljo.

He’s been waiting so long for an opportunity that is rightfully his.

I don’t want Ferguson to fight Charles.

Unnecessary elimination of a contender.

Will be a great fight. Who doesn’t want to see that? Father time and Justin are suggesting Tonys time is limited anyway.

This is an opportunity for both to get in contention. If Tony only wears shades outdoors and only cuts weight once he has a shot.

Didn’t say I won’t be happy to watch

I just wish it wasn’t the route they were going.

I don’t think the UFC want to put much stock in Oliveira because he isn’t a draw

I see this fight as a horrible matchup for Oliveira and a deliberate attempt to knock him down a peg and get Ferguson back on the winning track against a surging contender.

But what if

Do Bronx manages to sub Tony? He’d be #1 contender and it’d be something talked about forever when his career is brought up.

i feel u bro i like both guys alot, but that is a crazy fight though, but mannnn , i dont want to see either lose

Exactly.

Same here. I think if Charles wins that’s as high as he goes and Tony is just out of the picture.

No wonder they want Moreno and Fig on 3 weeks notice.

A very quick turnaround for Figueiredo and Moreno

Luckily they both didn’t take much damage and staying active has proven to keep fighters sharp so I like it.
