Alexa Grasso’s days in the strawweight division appear to be over.
After missing weight by 5.5 pounds at the UFC 246 official weigh-ins, which led to her fight against Claudia Gadelha to be canceled, Grasso issued an apology to Gadelha and the UFC on Friday evening.
“I want to apologize to Claudia Gadelha and the UFC. I know this is a fight all were waiting a lot, including me. I trained very much for this and I did everything to lose those pounds,” Grasso wrote on Instagram. “The commission did not allow our combat although my opponent and I agreed with the sanction this implied for me. The doctors did not allow me to compete.”
Grasso, 26, also came in heavy for an Aug. 5, 2017, bout against Randa Markos (weighing in at 119 pounds on that occasion). She went on to defeat Markos by split decision.
Grasso added that “with pain in her heart” she will compete in the flyweight division next.
“I know that at this weight I will be healthier and stronger giving my body all the nutrients it needs,” Grasso said.
