Jimmie Rivera vs. John Dodson set for UFC 228

Esther Lin, MMA FIghting

We know an interesting bantamweight fight will go down on Sept. 8. We just don’t yet know where.

Jimmie Rivera and John Dodson will meet at UFC 228, at a venue to be determined, MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani has learned.

Rivera (21-2) is coming off a knockout loss to Marlon Moraes in the main event of UFC Utica. Prior to the loss, the New Yorker had won 20 consecutive fights, including his first five UFC bouts.

Dodson (20-9), meanwhile, has been a factor in both the bantamweight and flyweight divisions during his UFC tenure. The JacksonWink competitor, and TUF 14 champion, has won two of his past three fights, most recently a split decision over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 222.

While still lacking a host site, this is the second fight reported for UFC 228, as a featherweight bout between Yair Rodriguez and Zabit Magomedsharipov is also slated to go down on Sept. 8.

Should be a cracker………NOT!

Yeah, Dodson just ruins every fight he is in these days

Dodson seems able to go to a split decision with all the top bantamweights, but whether he gets one judge on his side or two is the question.

2 Great Fights Thus Far

Excited for these 2 fights! I’d think Zabit and Jimmy should get the nods here but this is the most unpredictable sport.

Isnt Rivera just got KOed badly? Why not take a bit longer break? Dodson gonna crack his head….. look what happen to Mendes,

also Dodson is quick on the feet with power and very good takedown defense

Dodson last ko was on Gamburyan.

Talent wise I like JD winning this fight but what we have seen in recent trends not so sure he gets the W.

Mendes took a perfect counter hook to the side of the nose and everything turn blacked

He could have taken an entire year off and it would still have knock him out. It was way more brutal than the Conor tko he had 5 months before.

While Dodson has turned into more of a point fighter these days

I agree completely. I think a KO loss should be an automatic 6 month suspension…

Its 3 months away. He should be good as long as he doesn't spar too hard immediately.

P4P top 3 play it safe fighters in the UFC

Just behind Woodley at #1

I'm gonna guess it ends in a split decision.

Battle of the point fighters

Is it just me or has Dodson lost his pop?

Not too long ako he seemed to dominate everyone not named Demetrious.

I predict a three-round sparring match and a split.

Same Guy..... Same Tool Set... Same Personality....

John Dodson came to the UFC with a great skillset but is also a very very careful fighter resulting in what feel like boring fights. I struggle to recall what John has done over the last three years to broaden his skill set? His speed has not diminished but not sure what would happen to him against a Moraes.

I think his career in the UFC has stalled – but where would he go?

He caught Moraes with some good shots

but Moraes seems to have an iron chin, and Moraes also hits pretty hard so he didnt want to exchange with him too much. He needs more variety in his strikes to keep people off guard.

Moraes hit him with some low blows in that fight

If I’m remembering right

I kinda thought he won, but was also rooting for him and don’t remember why I thought that. (Aside from possible bias towards my preferred outcome)

"he" in that sentence being Dodson

Methinks DJ took a small part of his soul

Or he probably doesn’t have that power to sleep a BW. Probably should go back to Fly.

He slept TJ.

I think that’s his issue. Same guy. Same toolset. Same personality. Same style of Jackson/Wink point-fighting. After the Mouse beat him up a couple times, he moved to 35…and has been somewhat stagnant.

I think he will turn a fight w Rivera in to a boring affair. He likes to use his "footwork" (read as: he runs & pot-shots his opponent), and with Rivera just getting KO’d…I can see a tentative fight. It will be up to him to bring the fight to Dodson…if he can catch and hold on to him long enough to do any kinda damage. A fight w Marlon would be either an ass-whipping by Marlon, or a matter of what judges score what for who. He used to be an action fighter, now I feel he’s became boring and slower. Almost like the rest of the division caught up to him in terms of speed and power.

dangerous fight to take coming off of a brutal KO loss

Would have thought Riviera would take more of a break

I was thinking that too
