Round 1: Here we go, folks. We’re seconds away from the long-awaited Bellator debut of Yoel Romero. Even at age 44, Romero was in obscenely great shape this week. The light heavyweight limit is certainly treating him well. Romero is the first to make the walk to the cage — and it’s a party. He’s having a good old time. Here comes Davis. Mike Beltran is the third man in the cage. They touch ‘em up and we’re off. Davis takes the center of the cage and paws out a few jabs. A slow and patient start from Romero, as usual. We’re halfway through the round and neither man has committed to much offense. Romero misses with a high kick. Davis is staying long and measuring his shots. Romero just misses with a hard right hand, then slips a one-two. Pretty uneventful round.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Davis.
Round 2: Davis pushes forward early with his jab. The crowd here in San Jose is starting to get restless. Davis digs a nice left into Romero’s body. Big haymaker from Romero misses. Romero explodes into a combination but can’t land flush, then stuffs a desperate Davis level change. One-two connects for Davis, and he goes right back to the well with it. Romero chucks out a heavy leg kick that staggers Davis! Davis answers with another one-two that causes Romero to call him on. Davis slips a wild lunging overhand from Romero then responds with a jab. Big blast double-leg takedown from Davis with 20 seconds left! That was slick. He ends the round on top.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Davis. (20-18 Davis.)
Round 3: Third-round Romero has always been the most dangerous version of Romero, so let’s see. He may need a finish here. Romero lands first with a long left hand. Romero’s movement is super unorthodox right now, even for him. Davis with a quick takedown! Romero scrambles to his feet only to get dumped right back down to the canvas along the fence. Davis settles into half guard and goes to work with short shots. He’s smothering right now. Davis advances to side control and blasts Romero with a few knees to the midsection. Romero snatches an underhook and explodes to his feet. Two minutes to go — and there’s another instant takedown against the fence by Davis, who goes right back to work with elbows from the top. Romero briefly stands again only to get rag-dolled back to the floor. More knees to the midsection by Davis. He’s taken control of this fight. Davis rides out the rest of the round from a standing clinch position against the fence.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Davis. (30-27 Davis.)
Yoel Romero seems to have mistakenly believed this was going to be a five-round fight. He’s not happy.
Official Result: Phil Davis def. Yoel Romero via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-26)
