Round 1
Both men in orthodox with Aldo in his traditional stance and Munhoz with a high guard. Munhoz with lots of leg kicks early and Aldo controlling the range early., sticking a jab out there and then rips a combo to the body.
Munhoz with a high work rate early but he’s not landing clean. Aldo’s defense is excellent but not a ton coming back from the King of Rio. Big body shot from Aldo and he’s making a point of those. Aldo is checking every leg kick and then cracking the body.
BIG KNEE from Aldo as Munhoz steps in but Munhoz is dirt road tough and comes back with more. Munhoz starting to really press forward and he’s eating some counters now but he’s also landing the jab a bit. Aldo’s defense is so damn good though. Catching him clean is very tough.
Aldo starting to work his jab a bit more but he’s really sitting down on uppercuts and knees as Munhoz steps in and ducks. Munhoz loading up on shots a bit and that’s making it easier for Munhoz to defend. Seriously, Munhoz has thrown a lot this round and landed like three good shots. Aldo meanwhile rips the body again and Munhoz is eventually going to have to drop his hands to protect himself.
Now Aldo goes high with a right hand and it lands but Munhoz counters. Then a Mortal Kombat style uppercut from Aldo lands but Munhoz lands back right before the round ends.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Aldo.
Round 2
Aldo landed by far the cleaner shots in round one but Munhoz threw a ton and the judges tonight have been questionable. Could have gone either way under those circumstances.
The second round starts much the same with Munhoz really coming out aggressive and Aldo being Aldo. Now Aldo is starting to get that jab going but Munhoz is working in more combination. Adjustments from both men.
Aldo looking to sit down on his counters more and really try to hurt Munhoz but it’s the jab that is getting it done right now. Munhoz is doing this weird thing where he throws big spinning attacks or high kicks that have no chance of success instead of going with jabs and combos that are starting to land.
Aldo now landing a couple leg kicks to go with his jab which is really making its presence known. Munhoz starting to really pressure and that’s showing on his face as the jab continues to land. Aldo’s footwork remains some of the best in the sport. Pivoting around Munhoz like a ballerina.
Munhoz really starting to run himself onto strikes now. He’s landing some but really his shots are glancing at best and he’s eating some clean counters. The commentary team seems to think this is closer than it is but the faces tell the tale. Aldo is just a more technical fighter.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Aldo, 20-18 Aldo overall.
Round 3
Aldo starts the third with a big combo and then a knee. He clearly wants to make a statement this round and Munhoz clinches him as a result. They break and Aldo is once again going to work with the jab. Munhoz keeps pressing forward but he’s running headlong into Aldo’s offense. Moreover, Munhoz’s offense has really slowed down a ton this round.
Aldo has built a big lead this round and Munhoz seems a bit lost in how to attack Aldo. He can’t find a way through the layers and now Aldo is starting to open up on his own offense. Big combo from Aldo and then a big led kick turns Munhoz around. With two minutes left, Munhoz needs something big here.
Leg kick from Aldo drops Munhoz. He hasn’t thrown many but they’ve all landed with authority. Munhoz back up but he’s getting chewed up in there, bleeding from the left eyebrow now. Aldo looks fresh as a daisy. He’s seeing everything in there and really finding a rhythm. This is vintage Jose Aldo.
Wow. Jose Aldo just set his personal best for significant strikes landed in a fight, despite the fact that he has fought several five-rounders. That should show you what is happening here, and speak to Aldo’s greatness.
Munhoz is now little more than a target dummy out there now as his offense has all but ceased and Aldo puts an exclamation mark on things with a savage combo to end it.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Aldo, 30-27 Aldo overall.
