Sean Strickland put on a dominant showcase to beat Uriah Hall in the UFC Vegas 33 main event but neither fighter walked away unscathed once the battle was over.
On Wednesday, the Nevada State Athletic Commission released the medical suspensions from the card via MixedMartialArts.com and both of the headliners are looking at potential six-month layoffs after clashing for 25 minutes.
Uriah Hall likely got the worst of it with the commission revealing that he suffered a broken orbital bone in his right eye, which requires clearance by an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor or he’ll be out until Jan. 28, 2022 with a minimum suspension until at least Sept. 30 with no contact until Sept. 15.
Obviously, Hall can return sooner with a doctor’s clearance.
Following the event, Strickland said he actually suspended that was an injury suffered by Hall after watching the former Ultimate Fighter finalist favoring his eye throughout their fight.
“I think I might have broke his orbital,” Strickland said at the post-fight press conference. “Just cause in the second round, he was blinking and rubbing his eyes and as someone who’s broken their orbital, I’m like oh yeah, he probably broke his orbital. It was honestly a testament to see somebody who was probably fighting with one eye finish a fight like that.”
Of course, Strickland didn’t leave without his own potential injuries with the commission requiring him to get an x-ray of his left thigh and knee as well as a dental evaluation for a lower prosthetic tooth or he’ll be looking at a six-month suspension until Jan. 28, 2022 as well.
Meanwhile, Jared Gooden is also looking at a possible six-month layoff following his impressive win over Niklas Stolze on the main card. Despite the result, Gooden must have both hands x-rayed or he’ll be sitting out until Jan. 28, 2022 as well.
As previously reported, Ryan Benoit will also need a doctor’s clearance before returning to action after he suffered a fibular head fracture, which actually required an overnight stay in the hospital as physicians monitored swelling in his leg.
All told a total of nine fighters on the card are looking at potential six-month layoffs.
