For more on Paul vs. Woodley, check out the live blog by MMA Fighting’s Jed Meshew.
Round 1: Woodley comes out very low to start and it’s Paul moving around the outside early. Woodley probing with jabs to the body early, navigating the reach. Measured approach from both men early, each feeling with jabs. Paul starting to look for double jabs, while Woodley is still looking to cur the cage. Paul lands a good combination, including a hook to the body that scores. Woodley really taking his time here and Paul is settling in with his reach. Woodley lands a pair of hooks to the body when they two come together but not much on them. Woodley steps into an overhand right but Paul sees it come and steps off.
MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 Paul.
Round 2: It’s early yet, but Woodley only threw six punches in the first round. Can’t win a fight like that and that’s been a major problem for the former UFC welterweight champion over the past few years. Perhaps he’ll open up this round.
Paul looking comfortable to start the second. Standing tall and bouncing. Paul is the better boxer right now and Woodley needs to dirty this up because standing outside is giving Paul too much time to see the big right hand. Paul really working behind the jab but he’s moving A LOT. Wonder if he has the cardio to keep this up. Though, admittedly, Woodley isn’t making him work outside of the movement.
Not a lot of action this round. Paul continuing to jab and then he lands a solid combo. Paul is certainly looking like a man who is trying to get better. Woodley still stuck in first gear as he can’t corral Paul and the boo birds come out as the second round ends.
MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 Paul, 20-18 Paul overall.
Round 3: If Woodley keeps this up, this is going to be a long night for him and the fans. Paul isn’t going to risk opening up when he can win like this and so it’s a bit of a slog. Paul lands a good right hand and Woodley now starting to jab more. He’s also cutting the ring off better and lands a good right! Paul returns with a solid combo though and now the combination punching is really linking nicely.
Woodley working the jab more and now trying to fire the right behind it. He needs more of this and more counters. Paul is starting to fire with impunity and Woodley has to make him pay. Woodley lands a good uppercut when Paul ducks under but Paul is fine. Woodley lands a straight right at the bell that might be his best punch.
MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 Paul, 30-27 Paul overall.
Round 4: On the replay we see the right from Woodley landed well and Paul ate it without issue. That’s a problem for Woodley because he has no volume. Woodley comes out slightly more aggressive early, forcing more exchanges and both men are throwing with more power now. A clinch and Woodley starting to play physical on the inside.
Woodley walking Paul down consistently now but can’t quite find the line to pull the trigger and Paul seems to be slowing. WOODLEY CRACKS PAUL WITH A BIG LEFT HOOK! Paul stumbles to the ropes and holds on to prevent falling over and now Woodley is in pursuit! Paul is still on shaky legs and Woodley sensing the moment. Paul on his bike and waiting for the bell, which he makes it to.
MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 Woodley, 39-37 Paul overall.
Round 5: If Paul is slowing down, things could get very interesting. That probably should’ve been a knockdown for Woodley and he is brimming with confidence to start the fifth. Paul has his lands low and Woodley lands a big uppercut. Paul is trying to fire into Woodley but now Woodley is full of confidence.
Paul still throwing but he’s on the defensive now and Woodley’s right hand is finding a home. Paul misses a huge haymaker but a left hook does land and now Woodley drops his hand and is baiting a slugfest. Woodley has dropped his offense dramatically the back half of this round though and it’s letting Paul get back into it.
MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 Woodley, 48-47 Paul overall.
Round 6: That last round could’ve gone either way but Paul has weathered the storm.
Woodley marching Paul down and roughhousing on the inside again. Paul back to the jab and Woodley does not have enough offense. All one-shots now and Paul is eluding most of them. The fans are booing again and that gets Paul to open up with a 5-punch combo. Paul is clearly tired but he’s still out there working while Woodley is back to waiting.
Woodley has landed a few decent shots this round but if he could turn up the volume he could pull away from Paul here. Instead, Paul is outworking him now. Not a lot of power from Paul in these shots now but it’s more than the nothing Woodley is offering back. Woodley ends the round with a combo but it’s too little.
MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 Paul, 58-56 Paul overall.
Round 7: Woodley’s corner is imploring their fighter to just do something. This is a familiar scene if you’ve watched the last few years of his MMA career. But Woodley begins the 7th by clinching.
One minute into the 7th and Woodley has thrown maybe 2 punches. Paul isn’t doing much either though and Woodley lands a good counter left at least. Woodley forces and exchange and Paul cracks him with a hook. Woodley more active now and Paul taking deep breaths. Woodley starting to force the issue and land some decent shots inside. Paul lands a stepping left but his combinations have fallen off. Woodley eats a big counter right but Paul’s punches have no sting on them anymore and Woodley lands a shot of his own.
MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 Woodley, 67-66 Paul overall.
Round 8: It’s very possible Paul is up 6 rounds to 1 at this point. Woodley certainly needs something now and he starts with that in mind, hunting to start and throwing some bombs. Paul eats a right hand but Paul is looking refreshed for the final round. Paul has figured out he can duck in whenever and Woodley has no offense to prevent it. It’s just a clinch and time suck. Paul breathing heavily but STILL Woodley is not doing enough. Paul not doing much either though. He’s coasting this round. HUGE RIGHT HAND lands for Woodley but Paul takes it well and he’s sprinting around the ring waiting for the final bell. Paul celebrates as it ends and believes he’s won. He may well have but we score the bout:
MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 Woodley, 76-76 DRAW overall.
