A few years ago, Conor McGregor would go out of his way to take shots at Jose Aldo to get under his skin and now the former two-division UFC champion is coming to his defense.

During a recent appearance at a press conference in Russia, retired UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was asked about Aldo after he put on an impressive performance against Pedro Munhoz.

It was Aldo’s second straight win since coming up short in his bid to win the bantamweight title with a performance that has been argued as one of his best since joining the UFC roster.

Nurmagomedov vehemently disagreed with that assessment while also taking a swipe at McGregor at the same time.

“He got beat up when he fought … Petr [Yan], right?” Nurmagomedov said. “A guy wins one fight and everyone starts talking. When Conor [McGregor] fought [Donald] ‘Cowboy’[Cerrone], he looked like a lion. When he fights stronger opponents, he looks like a scared chicken. Fighting top fighters shows your worth.

“Let him fight Petr the same way. Then we can say he’s peaking again. You saw what he did. He closed up and waited for the ref to stop the fight. That shows that you’re not at your peak. If you’re getting hit and you’re conscious and you’re not defending yourself, I call those fighters businessmen. They come out to make money.”

Needless to say those comments didn’t sit too well with McGregor who took aim and fired at Nurmagomedov for the unprovoked dig at Aldo’s recent performance.

“This guy is still talking? Another press conference?” McGregor wrote on Twitter in response to Nurmagomedov. “You sh*t your pants of Cerrone your whole career. You pulled three times from [fighting] him. Your father, god rest his soul, could not believe his eyes the way I beat Cerrone. You disrespect Cerrone and now Aldo too? You ran away. Shut up.

“Another press conference? Haha for what? You are doing a whole load of nothing mate. You and Cerrone were locked in to fight since way back and you never had the courage. You ran away and now all you do is talk like b*tch. Aldo is 100 times the fighter you are, and ever will be.”

McGregor has rarely held his tongue when it comes to the war of words with Nurmagomedov even since before they met in the cage back in 2018.

While he’s rarely been on the right side of many of these arguments, Nurmagomedov has been receiving a fair amount of criticism for his insults towards Aldo after he won a lopsided fight against Munhoz at UFC 265.

In recent months, McGregor has taken a much different attitude towards Aldo after they met in the octagon back in 2015 with the Irish superstar earning a blistering 13-second knockout to become the undisputed UFC featherweight champion.

After breaking his leg in his most recent fight against Dustin Poirier in July, Aldo spoke glowingly about McGregor and predicted that he would come back because he never doubted “ the champions.” Now it appears McGregor is repaying the favor by directing his vitriol towards Nurmagomedov after he made the derogatory comments about Aldo.
