UFC flyweight contender Askar Askarov will have to wait even longer before he can attempt to secure his shot at the title.
An injury has forced Askarov out of his upcoming fight against former title challenger Alex Perez and now Ultimate Fighter veteran Matt Schnell steps into replace him. The new fight date for Perez vs. Schnell will be the upcoming UFC event scheduled on Aug. 28.
Multiple sources confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Thursday. ESPN initially reported the change.
A constant threat at 125 pounds, Schnell looks to take a step forward in his career while facing off against Perez in August.
With a 5-2 record in his past seven fights, Schnell has picked up several impressive wins including a triangle choke submission over Louis Smolka as well as a similar submission victory against Jordan Espinosa.
Most recently, Schnell dropped a decision to Rogerio Bontorin, who actually replaced Perez in the fight after he was forced out of the matchup due to injury. Now Schnell and Perez will face off as part of the upcoming UFC event on Aug. 28.
The card is expected to be headlined by a featherweight showdown as Edson Barboza takes on fellow striker Giga Chikadze in the five-round main event.
