The fight is a highly anticipated trilogy that was set in motion by a rematch. Frustrated with inactivity in 2020, McGregor angled for a charity MMA match with Poirier and was directed to the octagon by the UFC, which put them in the octagon in January at UFC 257. Fighting 10 pounds heavier than their initial meeting in 2014, Poirier absorbed McGregor’s best shots and returned fire to hobble the former two-division champ and put him away in the second round, avenging a 2014 knockout loss at featherweight.
The winner of the fight has been identified as the first challenger to the UFC lightweight belt currently held by Charles Oliveira. Poirier, the No. 1 ranked lightweight in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings, puts his rank at risk and aims to clean up with a lucrative bout against No. 11 McGregor, the UFC’s most bankable fighter. McGregor, meanwhile, puts his star power on the table after suffering the first knockout loss of his career.
