LFA to crown new welterweight champion with one-night tournament in Brazil

Legacy Fighting Alliance is heading to Brazil for its first international events on July 16 and 18 and the cards, stacked with local prospects, will also crown the company’s new welterweight champion with a one-night, four-man grand prix.

LFA 111 and LFA 112 will take place at the Upper Arena in Rio de Janeiro and air live on UFC Fight Pass.

Multiple sources confirmed to MMA Fighting that Brenner Alberth vs. Gabriel Bonfim and Carlos Leal vs. Diego Dias are set for the 170-pound tournament on July 18, and the winners will collide later that night for the vacant title.

Alberth (8-0), 25, has won all his fights inside the distance since his debut in 2015. Bonfim (10-0), two years younger, also has a 100 percent finishing rate with eight submissions and two knockouts.

Leal (12-3), who was victorious in his sole Bellator appearance in 2017, enters the tournament on a six-fight winning streak, while Dias (13-3, 1 no contest) makes his promotional debut after winning three in a row in the Brazilian circuit.

Junior Marques (9-2) vs. Quemuel Ottoni (9-3) and Wendell Giacomo (8-2) vs. Uyran Carlos (11-4) will serve as the alternates to the tournament.

LFA 112 will also feature the debut of highly touted featherweight prospect Gabriel Braga (5-0) versus Jhonatan Cordeiro (5-1), and former Shooto Brasil flyweight champion Rafael Ramos (9-0) opposite Filipe Esteves (7-0).

Two night before, on July 16, jiu-jitsu star Ary Farias (10-2) makes his return to the LFA cage after back-to-back first-round finishes in Brazil. Farias, who won his sole LFA appearance back in July 2019, will face Marcos Breno (13-2) at bantamweight. Michele Oliveira (2-0), the IMMAF flyweight world champion in 2017, looks for her third professional victory after a 5-0 run as an amateur, taking on undefeated Stephanie Luciano (2-0).
