UFC middleweight Paulo Costa appears to be at odds with his promoter over money. But he’s still a fighter, and he knows a good opportunity.

Costa on Monday welcomed the idea of fighting recent middleweight title challenger Marvin Vettori, who lost a rematch against champ Israel Adesanya this past Saturday at UFC 263.

Vettori had won five straight before the entered the octagon for a second time against Adesanya, who notched his third title defense with unanimous 50-45 scores.

Adesanya mocked Vettori for a promotional picture released prior to the fight showing the Italian’s Venum fight shorts on backward. The two exchanged heated words at the press conference for the fight.

No less an Adesanya rival than Vettori, Costa targeted the champ online and in several interviews before losing by second-round TKO when they faced off at UFC 253. Costa later attributed his loss to drinking too much wine the night before the fight.

Costa hasn’t fought since the loss this past September, and a return in April was cancelled due to lingering symptoms from a previous COVID-19 infection. He withdrew from a subsequent booking against Jared Cannonier, later claiming he’d been offered “a joke” payday of $350,000 for the fight.

Recent news of the lofty purses paid to Jake and Logan Paul – and their opponents – prompted Costa to declare the YouTube stars were “showing all disgrace on this business.”

In response, UFC President Dana White said Costa “should have started a YouTube channel when you were [expletive] 13 years old and built your name up” and blasted his previous performance. At the press conference for UFC 263, he doubled down on his remarks.

“He said some nutty sh*t and I straightened it out,” White said. “That’s how I look at it. Sounds like he’s gonna sit down and hang out for a while. He said, ‘I wanted to be paid more because of what all the YouTube stars are making.’ Apparently he didn’t see his last fight.”
