Carlos Felipe and Greg Hardy weighed approximately the same for their most recent UFC bouts, reaching the limit of the heavyweight division, but their physiques couldn’t look more different. That’s one of the reasons why “Boi” would love that matchup.
Felipe re-enters the octagon this Saturday to face Jake Collier at UFC 263 in Glendale, AZ, while Hardy battles Tai Tuivasa a month later in Las Vegas. Regardless of “The Prince of War’s” performance at UFC 264, Felipe wants him next.
“I would really love to beat Greg Hardy,” Felipe said in an interview with MMA Fighting. “I don’t like him at all since the first time I saw him in the UFC, especially because of his track record. And he’s cocky. I would really love to punch him. I love beating big, shredded guys. Put them against the chubby guy and let’s see who wins.”
Felipe won 10 of 11 professional MMA bouts with six stoppages and was victorious in his last two in the UFC with decisions over Yorgan De Castro and Justin Tafa. Hardy, a former NFL player, joined in the UFC as a 3-0 heavyweight and won half of his eight octagon appearances.
“I don’t think he’s that good,” Felipe said. “To me, he’s just size and a heavy hand — and his hand isn’t that big of a deal either. I think it would be a perfect matchup for me style-wise and he can’t keep up with my pace. His hype is all about size and being controversial, but I’m not impressed. I can list 15 lighters that are better than him. Yorgan De Castro is better than him, and so are Justin Tafa and [Sergey] Spivak. So, to me, he sucks.”
Felipe has to get past Collier at UFC 263 before worrying about Hardy, though, and he envisions an exciting battle before eventually putting away “The Prototype,” a former middleweight who has bulked all the way up to heavyweight in recent years.
“I think the main thing in this fight is cardio,” Felipe said of his clash Wirth Collier, who won a decision over Gian Villante before losing his heavyweight debut to Tom Aspinall. “He’s not used to all that weight even though he has fought in this division before. I’m sure he won’t be able to keep up with my pace because all that weight will play against him in this fight.
“I could be dead but it’s automatic, I go on zombie mode and continue to march forward and people can’t keep up. He will crumble. I’ll put so much pressure he will quit. I don’t think we’ll reach the third round.”
