The series is tied at one win apiece for both lightweight combatants with Poirier carrying the momentum of the most recent win earlier this year. In their first meeting, McGregor stopped Poirier in under two minutes at UFC 178 in September 2014.
The rematch would take place over six years later in the main event of January’s UFC 257 event on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi where Poirier extracted his revenge on the former two-division world champion via second-round TKO. The win did more than enough to earn “The Diamond” at shot at the lightweight title, but Poirier opted to close the book on his rivalry with the sport’s biggest star instead.
