Ferguson, a former interim champion, enters in a must-win situation for his title aspirations after a pair of losses, one a brutal TKO loss to Justin Gaethje for the interim title at UFC 249 and the other a lopsided decision loss to current lightweight title challenger Charles Oliveira. Before the coronavirus upended the world, he was scheduled to fight for the lightweight title against then-champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, realizing a matchup that had been cancelled on four occasions. He’d won 12 straight fights before his current skid.
Dariush, a veteran 155-pounder, has long coveted a shot at ranked opposition but has until now been unable to break through the pack to face a marquee name. He’s won five fights on his current streak, most recently earning a split decision over Carlos Diego Ferreira in a rematch.
