Luan Santiago and Benoit St. Denis successfully made weight Wednesday for a super lightweight (165 pounds) title eliminator bout in the main event of Brave CF 49 in Bahrain, but Santiagos’s teammate Gabriel Miranda was left without an opponent.
“Fly” was slated to face Colombian featherweight Dumar Roa in the antepenultimate fight of the night, but “Corazon de Leon” stepped on the scale at 159,2 pounds, way over the 146-pound limit for non-championship bouts.
Brave CF announced the fight was canceled and Miranda will be paid his show money.
“I’m in a mix of emotions that I’ve never felt before,” Miranda wrote in a statement to MMA Fighting. “Only us, athletes, training partners and coaches really know what happens inside the gym in a fight camp so important as this one, [a fight which] could determine a title contender. Injuries, pain, diet, stress, a million difficulties that are overcome by the bigger goal, which is becoming world champion.
“I went through all that and much more and made championship weight. It was hard and I didn’t need to go under 146 pounds, but I wanted to show I was ready and I will become champion of this division. Minutes later I find out my opponent missed weight, he was over the lightweight limit as well at 160 pounds. I walked by him at the sauna this morning, after I made weight, and he said he was 4.4 pounds over. I even joked that for some percentage I would accept those 4.4 pounds. I just wanted to fight and secure my title shot.
“I’m very frustrated with this situation, but happy to know that I’ve done my job with perfection. I would fight him even if he was 44 pounds overweight, but the commission in Bahrain didn’t allow him to fight due to the weight difference and my fight has been cancelled, unfortunately. I’m away from my wife and kids for so long and my son asks me, in every video call we make, if it’s fight day already. The importance of this fight for Brazil and the world, and now it won’t happen.
“Dumar, you screwed up. You could have said before and we would have made a catchweight, but I know my team and I did what he had to do. I’ll find strength within my family and my faith that everything comes on the right time when you believe and work. I’m sure the time to harvest will come and it won’t be long. Thank you for the opportunity to clarify the facts and be able to officially give this sad news through the biggest MMA website in the world. My title eliminator bout won’t happen at Brave 49.”
