Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is expected to return to action in March for a showdown against Vicente Luque at UFC 260.
Multiple sources with knowledge of the matchup confirmed agreements are in place when speaking to MMA Fighting, with Luque’s side having signed a contract for the fight. ESPN initially reported the potential fight.
Once everything is finalized, Woodley will compete having dropped three straight fights dating back to 2019 when he lost the welterweight title to Kamaru Usman. Since then, Woodley lost two more bouts to Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington in lopsided fashion.
Regarded as one of the best welterweights in UFC history, Woodley has struggled against the three fighters currently sitting at the top of the rankings in the division. Now he’ll look to begin his climb back up the rankings with a fight against an always dangerous opponent in Luque.
With an 8-1 record in his past nine appearances including three Fight of the Night awards, Luque has cemented his place as one of the most exciting and dangerous fighters competing in the welterweight division. During that nine-fight stretch, Luque has only gone to a decision twice, with TKO finishes in his past two fights against Randy Brown and Niko Price.
When all the contracts are signed, Woodley and Luque will join a growing lineup at UFC 260 on March 27 with a pair of title fights at the top of the card as heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic clashes with Francis Ngannou in the main event while featherweight king Alexander Volkanovski squares off against Brian Ortega.
