UFC flyweight Alex Perez was the final fighter on the UFC 269 card to weigh in, and he missed weight by a scant quarter-pound. But as it turned out, his miss wouldn’t matter after his opponent Matt Schnell was ruled out of the event.
Minutes after Perez came in heavy, UFC officials announced Schnell had been forced to withdraw from Saturday’s event due to a “medical issue” that prompted the overseeing Nevada Athletic Commission to rule him out. No further details were offered.
Had Schnell been cleared to fight, Perez would have had to make a second attempt or face a purse fine due to his miss. Instead, he will sit on the sidelines.
UFC 269 is headlined by a pair of title fights: Lightweight champ Charles Oliveira faces off with Dustin Poirier, and two-division champ Amanda Nunes defends her bantamweight belt against Julianna Pena. The champions and challengers were first to weigh in on Friday morning in Las Vegas and all successfully made weight.
One other fighter, Priscila Cachoeira, missed weight, coming in heavy for a bout against Gillian Robertson. She will be fined a portion of her purse, which will go to Robertson.
