Shane Burgos finally returned to the win column following a back-and-forth battle with Billy Quarantillo at UFC 268.

The featherweights threw over 700 strikes in just 15 minutes but ultimately it was Burgos with a nasty calf kick and a strong boxing attack that eventually started to do the kind of damage needed to beat Quarantillo. When the fight ended, all three judges scored the fight 29-28 with Burgos getting the nod by unanimous decision.

“That was the game plan from the jump,” Burgos said about his calf kicks. “Awesome job, he is tough as sh*t. He ate some hard calf kicks and kept coming. Respect to him but I’m back baby. It’s been two f*cking years since I got my hand raised!”

The best punch throughout early going was Quarantillo’s jab, which was just continuously popping Burgos in the face. The consecutive shots landed had blood pouring out of Burgos’ nose as he countered with a variety of strikes including some hard shots to the body and a few stiff leg kicks.

With Quarantillo moving forward, Burgos caught him off guard with a quick right hook that definitely got his attention. Quarantillo was undeterred as he came firing back with another series of punches in succession in order to keep Burgos on his heels.

While Quarantillo was still finding a home for his straight punches, Burgos was quick to counter with a powerful right hand that started landing at will. During one big exchange late in the second round, Burgos cracked Quarantillo with a blistering counter right hand that had him on wobbly legs as he backed up to the cage.

Burgos poured on the pressure while throwing a barrage of shots but Quarantillo would not go away.

Of course, Burgos was going to do everything possible to finish the fight while still beating up Quarantillo’s lead leg with more than 30 kicks landed over three rounds. Even with the damage mounting, Quarantillo was still giving a gritty performance while looking for takedowns and working inside the clinch as he continued trading strikes with Burgos until the final horn.

It was a much needed win for Burgos after he dropped his last two fights in a row as he looks to begin his climb back up the ranks at featherweight.
