Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant: Live round-by-round updates

MMA Fighting has Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant live round-by-round updates for one of the top boxing fights of the year.

Canelo vs. Plant takes place on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event will start around 11 p.m. ET. Check out our Canelo vs. Plant results page to find out what happened on the undercard.

This clash will determine the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Canelo Alvarez, who is 56-1-2 with 38 knockouts, will compete for the third time this year. He will be defending the WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles.

Caleb Plant, who is 21-0 with 12 knockouts, will compete for only the second time this year. He currently holds the IBF super middleweight championship.

Out first, the IBF super middleweight champion and undefeated boxer Caleb Plant.

Next, WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.

The fighters have entered the ring. Tonight’s winner will be recognized as the first-ever undisputed super middleweight champion in the four-belt era.

Round 1: Plant comes out rifling his jab. Canelo looks happy to stand and defend. A minute in and Canelo’s gloves have barely moved away from his head. Plant probing with the jab. Canelo fires out a right hand that draws a loud reaction from the pro-Canelo crowd. Right hand to the body, Plant avoids the follow-up head shot. Canelo wants to cut off the ring. Plant continues to jab. Quick right by Plant. Canelo lands a body shot.

Round 2: Left hook by Plant. He pops Canelo with a jab and circles away from the ropes. Canelo cutting off angles. Glancing left hook by Canelo, then an uppercut as Plant tries to clinch. Nice counter left hook by Plant. Canelo hits a left of his own. Canelo with a right hand. Body-head combo by Canelo. They trade left hooks. Canelo doesn’t let Plant duck away from him, firing one to the body and then head-hunting with his left. Plant goes to the body. Canelo lands another body-head combination. Canelo finding the range as the round closes.

Round 3: Plant opens the third attacking the body. He’s sticking with the jab to keep Canelo back. Quick left uppercut for Plant. He’s sticking and moving. Canelo with a good body shot, just misses with the left hook follow-up. Plant scores with a jab. Canelo rips the body. Left hook by Canelo sneaks through. Plant lands a straight right.

Round 4: Plant zings in a solid left hand. Canelo walking Plant down, there’s the left hook again. Canelo has Plant against the ropes and he’s throwing bombs, Plant defending well though. Right hand by Canelo. Canelo with a couple of hooks up top, there’s one to the body. Plant not being evasive in the fourth. Canelo smacks him with a clean left.

Round 5: Plant keeps flicking that jab out, he’s not deviating from the game plan. Canelo counters with body punches. The referee warns both fighters, telling Canelo to get his punches up and Plant not to push Canelo’s head down. Plant connects, but that makes Canelo come forward and back Plant up to the ropes. Plant just turning his shoulder to Canelo to dull the incoming punches. Canelo patiently throwing when he sees an opening.

Round 6: Plant with a slick combination down the middle. Canelo quick to cut him off again and he connects with a right-left combo. Canelo doubles up on his left hook. Canelo with a right hand over the top. Plant hits Canelo with a hard jab, Canelo right back at him with a combination. Canelo finding a home for the right hand. Left hook square lands square on Plant’s face. Canelo with excellent head movement as he marches forward.

Round 7: Plant avoids a Canelo left and fires back with a left. Plant’s jab is serving him well, he’s just not doing much after he lands. Canelo head-hunting with that left. Canelo misses and Plant gets him square in the face with a counter right. Now it’s Plant working to corner Canelo. Canelo just leaning on the ropes and letting Plant punch away. Not much landing hard. Plant jabs at an advancing Canelo. A good left hook lands for Canelo just before the bell.

Round 8: Canelo goes body-head with the left hook, and then lands another left up top. More jabs from Plant. Lunging left by Plant, Canelo throws a hook to create some space. Plant to the body. Plant able to keep the fight in the center of the ring, out of the corner. Nice body shot by Canelo. Plant jabs the body, Canelo hits a short left. Canelo with a right body shot.

Round 9: Canelo backs Plant up right away. Canelo doubles up on jab. Canelo eats some jabs to the body and hits Plant with a left hook. Plant is answering the body shots with a straight right. Plant gives Canelo two to the body, then a jab. Two good left hooks for Canelo. That left hook lands again. Plant goes back to the right hand to back Canelo up. That doesn’t last long, Canelo has Plant against the ropes again and Plant clinches to reset the action. Plant with a flurry of punches, partially defended.

Round 10: Jab by Plant opens the 10th. Canelo flurries with Plant on the ropes. Loud right hits Plant’s body. Canelo really digging in with the body work. Plant works his jab. Canelo’s left hook is finding its mark. Canelo having success with the jab now. Canelo goes 1-2 to the body. They exchange body shots, Plant landing a good one square in the middle. Canelo with a jab.

Round 11: Canelo shows a speedy jab. He jabs and lands two more to the body. Left hook hurts Plant and he drops to his knees. He’s quick to get up, standing eight-count and he’s ready to go. Canelo really pouring it on now, Plant desperate to get away, but he’s just stumbling around the ring. More power punches Land and Plant drops again, he’s on his back, no need for a count here. Canelo Alvarez is now the undisputed super middleweight champion.
