ONE Championship has made the decision to postpone the upcoming ONE X card in December due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Singapore.
ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong made the announcement via his Facebook account on Wednesday. Ariel Helwani first broke the news.
“Due to the record high viral outbreak in Singapore, ONE: X will now take place early next year instead of December 5,” Sityodtong wrote on Wednesday. “The Singapore Government continues to do an extraordinary job in managing the situation for the country. I am full of gratitude and appreciation for its incredible leadership and excellence. Please note that our regular shows for November and December are expected to continue as per usual. It is a tricky time for everyone in Singapore, but I am confident that we will all get through these times by working together with compassion, resilience, creativity, and patience.
“ONE: X is not only a celebration of our tenth year anniversary, but it is also going to be the biggest event in our history. [Demetrious Johnson] vs Rodtang [Jitmuangnon], [Bibiano] Fernandes vs [John] Lineker, and [Thanh] Le vs [Garry] Tonon are just a few of the fights on this mega card. I cannot wait to unveil what else we have in store for fans with ONE: X.”
ONE Championship has been staging shows in Singapore with a limited number of fans in attendance at recent shows after previously holding cards behind closed doors without an audience due to COVID protocols in the country.
The Singaporean government announced earlier this week that a spike in COVID cases resulted in nearly 84 percent of intensive care unit beds now filled in the country.
While ONE hasn’t announced a new date for the ONE X card, additional sources speaking to MMA Fighting on Wednesday stated that a targeted date in March is possible, although no decisions have been finalized as of yet.
The ONE X card was set to be headlined by former UFC champion Johnson taking on ONE Muay Thai champion Rodtang in a mixed rules match that would have alternated between Muay Thai and MMA over four rounds.
