UFC Vegas 38 has already seen a few hiccups.

At Friday’s official weigh-ins for the event, three fighters missed weight, including Aspen Ladd and Bethe Correia, the latter ahead of what has been announced as her retirement bout.

Ladd was the last fighter to appear and when she showed up she was still fully dressed as if she was attempting to sweat off the last few pounds. The bantamweight’s initial weigh-in attempt was registered at 141.5 pounds and her team immediately called for the box to be brought out so she could strip down and weigh in again.

After a lengthy process in which it appeared that Ladd was struggling to stay balanced, she came in at 137 pounds, still one pound over the limit (including one-pound allowance for non-title fights).

Though Ladd’s opponent Macy Chiasson successfully made weight at 136 pounds, MMA Fighting confirmed with officials that their bout has been cancelled.

Correia came in at 138.5 pounds, 2.5 pounds over the bantamweight limit, for her fight with Karol Rosa (135.5). This is expected to be the last MMA fight of Correia’s nine-year career.

This is the second time that Correia has missed weight in her UFC career. At UFC 237 in May 2019, Correia came in five pounds over the bantamweight limit for a fight with Irena Aldana, an infraction that cost her 30 percent of her purse. Aldana went on to defeat Correia by third-round submission.

One other fighter missed weight, UFC newcomer Mike Breeden. Breeden came in at 158.5 pounds, two pounds over the limit for his lightweight bout against Alexander Hernandez. He is stepping in on less than a week’s notice for Leonardo Santos, who withdrew for undisclosed reasons.

Correia and Breeden’s respective bouts will proceed as catchweights with both fighters forfeiting 20 percent of their purses to their opponents.

Saturday’s headliners Thiago Santos and Johnny Walker both successfully hit the light heavyweight mark, with Santos tipping the scales at 206 pounds and Walker at 204.5.
