Jon Jones jabs at Daniel Cormier on 6-year anniversary of UFC 182 win

On this day six years ago, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones ended a heated rivalry with Daniel Cormier by defending his title via unanimous decision at UFC 182.

And as media outlets, including MMA Fighting, took note, Jones made sure to remind his enemy of his dominance.

In a pair of later-deleted tweets, Jones posted a laughing emoji and the jab, “Don’t confuse a season with forever.”

Cormier considers his trilogy with current heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic a great rivalry in the sport. But he believes his pair of fights with Jones elevated a rivalry to something bigger.

The buildup to UFC 182 was one of the most contentious in the sport’s history. Jones and Cormier fought in the lobby of the MGM Grand during a press conference promoting their matchup. Later, Jones was caught on a hot mic issuing a death threat to Cormier.

A rematch two years later at UFC 214 was no less fiery, with the fighters’ camps having to be separated before the bout.

Jones won both of his fights against Cormier, winning on points the first time and via third-round KO in the second. Both bouts were marred by post-fight drug positives, the first for cocaine and the second for oral turinabol. The latter came after a positive pre-fight drug test scratched a scheduled meeting at UFC 200 and resulted in a one-year suspension for Jones.

Cormier, 41, retired this past August after failing to recapture the heavyweight title from Miocic at UFC 252. He became the UFC’s second two-division champion when he knocked out Miocic in their first meeting at UFC 226; Miocic later retook the belt in a rematch at UFC 241.

Since retirement, Jones and Cormier have continued to take shots at each other, particularly when one drops the other’s name in the media.
