Back when McGregor and Poirier were still establishing themselves as UFC stars, the two met on the main card of UFC 178 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Poirier entered the bout with more octagon experience, but McGregor promptly put him away with strikes in under two minutes.
The next year, McGregor would become a world champion at 145 pounds, while Poirier began a lightweight journey that culminated in him becoming an interim UFC lightweight champion in 2019.
McGregor and Poirier are now set to fight a second time when they headline UFC 257 on Jan. 23 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, and the winner likely will challenge for a lightweight title in the near future.
