Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is known as one of the nicest people in the entire combat sports industry, but he decided to stir up some serious controversy on Tuesday.
OK, not really.
The former two-time UFC title contender took to Twitter to very respectfully call out fellow welterweight Leon Edwards for a potential fight in the most “Wonderboy” way possible.
In fact, Thompson noted that it’s the first time he’s ever publicly requested an opponent on social media and it’s definitely an odd feeling for him.
“All due respect Leon Edwards, which I have a lot of for you, I have been saying I would like to fight you for a while now!” Thompson said. “It makes sense and would be a great match up.
“I think that was my first Twitter call out ever. Man that felt weird.”

I think that was my first Twitter call out ever. man that felt weird. #FirstTimeForEverything
Thompson followed up his post with a hash tag saying “first time for everything” as he looks to face Edwards as his next opponent.
The nasty trash talk aside, Thompson hasn’t fought since this past November and this is now the second time he’s publicly requested a showdown with Edwards.
Thompson is still widely considered one of the best 170-pound fighters in the world while Edwards is riding an eight-fight win streak as he anxiously awaits an opportunity to contend for the welterweight championship.
Edwards has actually been out of action for over a year after his previously scheduled fight with former champion Tyron Woodley was scrapped back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since that time, Edwards has called out a number of top ranked welterweights including a recent jab at former interim champion Colby Covington following his win over Woodley this past weekend.
It remains to be seen if the UFC will try to book Edwards against “Wonderboy” or attempt to book another fight for “Rocky” as he seeks a title shot sooner rather than later.
