Billy Quarantillo engaged in a war with Kyle Nelson early but it was a devastating right hand at the start of the third round that helped him earn his first UFC knockout.

The Contender Series veteran saw the momentum shift in his direction at the close of the second but he needed just one more exchange and a single combination to end Nelson’s night at UFC Vegas 10. The fight was stopped at just seven seconds into the third round.

“I just kept hitting him, kept hitting him and got the win,” Quarantillo said after moving to 3-0 in the UFC. “I was ready to go for a hard 15 [minutes]. Laced him right up the middle [with the right hand]. I got the win, I got the finish. Let’s go.”

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the opening round with both Nelson and Quarantillo putting together good offensive game plans. Nelson continuously targeted the lead leg while Quarantillo was going head hunting during numerous striking exchanges.

Midway through round two, Quarantillo connected with a clubbing elbow to the head while working inside the clinch as he looked for the takedown. Nelson immediately returned fire while happily trading shots with Quarantillo against the cage.

As time ticked away, Quarantillo continued to press the action while finding a consistent home for that same elbow strike that came chopping down on Nelson like an axe. Just before the horn sounded, Nelson slipped to the floor and Quarantillo made him pay for it with a brutal punch as he followed his opponent to the ground.

Once he was released from his corner at the start of the third, Quarantillo threw a left hand followed by the right that blasted Nelson in the eye and sent him crashing to the canvas with the referee quickly jumping in to stop the fight.

A winner of eight fights in a row, Quarantillo seems to get better with every performance while proving he’s a featherweight prospect to watch in 2020 and beyond.
