Making weight on two days’ notice proved to be too tough a task for Austin Springer.
The UFC newcomer weighed in at 151 pounds at the official weigh-ins for Saturday’s UFC Vegas 8 card, five pounds over the limit (including a one-pound allowance) for his featherweight bout opposite Alex Caceres. Springer stepped in on short notice after Caceres lost opponents Giga Chikadze (positive COVID-19 test) and initial replacement Kevin Croom (undisclosed) earlier this week.
Caceres successfully made weight at 145 pounds and his bout with Springer will proceed at a catchweight with Springer forfeiting 30 percent of his purse.
The main event and co-main event weigh-ins went off without a hitch. Headliners Anthony Smith (205) and Aleksandar Rakic (205.5) successfully made the light heavyweight limit, while former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler hit 171 for his co-main event fight against Neil Magny (171).
One other fighter came in heavy - Hannah Cifers. The strawweight weighed in at 117.5 pounds on her first attempt and could only make 117 on her second try, which took place behind covers after she removed her clothing for the attempt.
Cifers’ bout with Mallory Martin (115.5) will proceed at a catchweight with Cifers forfeiting 20 percent of her purse.
