The upcoming UFC card on Aug. 22 has taken a major hit after multi-time title contender Yoel Romero was forced out of his co-main event fight against Uriah Hall.
Multiple people with knowledge of the withdrawal confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Tuesday, though details surrounding Romero’s removal are unclear at this time. The news was first reported by BJPenn.com.
Romero was making his return to action after losing a decision to reigning UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya in March. It was his third loss in a row overall, but all three fights against Adesanya, Paulo Costa and Robert Whittaker ended in razor-close decisions.
With Romero out, there’s no word yet if Hall will remain on the card against a different opponent.
Hall has run into unfortunate circumstances with his past two scheduled fights after he missed out on a chance to face Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza back in May after the Brazilian tested positive for COVID-19 just days before they were scheduled to clash at UFC 249.
The fight was pulled from the card, and Hall didn’t get rebooked until the matchup with Romero was announced for August. Now he’ll miss out on that opportunity, as well.
The upcoming UFC event on Aug. 22 is headlined by a bantamweight clash between Frankie Edgar and Pedro Munhoz with the event held at the APEX facility in Las Vegas.
