This is the UFC Vegas 5 live blog for Joanne Calderwood vs. Jennifer Maia, the flyweight co-headliner for Saturday’s fight card at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.

Calderwood was set to fight Valentina Shevchenko before a leg injury forced the champ to withdraw from the bout. Calderwood, who most recently outpointed Andrea Lee, agreed to take on Maia, whose most recent outing ended in a unanimous decision loss to one-time title challenger Katlyn Chookagian.

Round 1: Jason Herzog is the third person in the cage for this co-main event. Lot’s of feints to start the bout with. Maia looking to box and Calderwood mixing it up with kicks. Maia having success with her right hand early, landing a few hooks and overhands. Calderwood looking to keep distance with a number of teeps. Maia working in combination and Calderwood trying to counter with single shots. Maia is definitely the quicker fighter. Maia throws a teep to the face but Calderwood catches it and takes the BJJ black belt down. Maia gets to the fence butt Calderwood is staying on top of her and trying to grind. Maia turns and now she’s trying to work on an omoplata but Calderwood is staying defensive and eventually Maia has tto abandon it and is now in full guard. Maia is trying to climb her legs but not having much success. Calderwood hasn’t thrown much though and now Maia gets an armbar! Calderwood is trying to defend but Maia has rolled her over and this looks tight. Calderwood almost has her elbow out but Maia adjusts and now this is very dangerous! Calderwood tries to hitchhiker out but Maia doesn’t allow it and starts cranking on the elbow, forcing Calderwood to tap! The big risk for Joanna Calderwood does not pay off and we may have a new title challenger.

OFFICIAL DECISION: Jennifer Maia submits Joanne Calderwood with an armbar at 4:29 of the first round.
