UFC on ESPN 14 live blog: Fabricio Werdum vs. Alexander Gustafsson

This is the UFC on ESPN 14 live blog for Fabricio Werdum vs. Alexander Gustafsson, heavyweight main card bout on Saturday’s fight card at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Former champ Werdum returns on a two-fight skid that most recently saw him lose a split call to Aleksei Oleinik at UFC 249. Three-time light heavyweight title challenger Gustafsson returns 13 months after declaring his retirement. In his previous two bouts, he was stopped by champ Jon Jones and Anthony Smith, respectively.

Round 1: Gustafsson, light on his feet, paws with a jab as Werdum attacks the leg. More kicks from Werdum, and he misses wide on a hook. Gustafsson continues to press jabs to the body, and he lets go with a combo inside. Single-leg from Werdum initiates a scramble, and Gustafsson lets him have it with a series of hammerfists. Werdum won’t let go as Gustafsson tries to escape, and he scrambles to the back. Quick transition to an armbar, and Gustafsson is in trouble. Pause as Gustafsson tries to wait it out, but Werdum is about to extend. Nowhere to go - all Werdum needs to do is break the grip, and that he does. Fight over, and Werdum closes out his contract – and possible UFC career - on a first-round win.
