Gilbert Burns has passed his follow up COVID-19 test.
The top ranked welterweight contender revealed the result via his Twitter page on Monday. While appearing on a recent episode of MMA Fighting’s What the Heck, Burns said he was still feeling some lingering affects of his positive test that forced him out of the main event of UFC 251 against Kamaru Usman for the 170-pound title, but was feeling much better.

With Burns out of the fight, Jorge Masvidal stepped in on short notice and lost a unanimous decision to Usman.
Now that “Durinho” is on the other side of the virus, he his ready to get back to work and prepare for his opportunity to take the welterweight strap.
“I’m very happy with the results from the test after being quarantined for two weeks at home,” Burns told MMA Fighting. “I’m thankful and very happy I can go back to my regular routine.”
Burns told MMA Fighting last week that he was feeling at around “85 percent” physically and was advised by his coaches to take another two weeks off to let his body fully recover. Fortunately for Burns, UFC president Dana White confirmed in multiple media scrums that the 34-year-old will be next in line.
In addition—following Usman’s victory over Masvidal—White reached out to Burns personally to let him know that would be the case. As difficult as it was for Burns to miss out on his first shot at a world title, he believed it was for the best since he’s been one of the most active fighters on the roster.
“It was a hard pill to swallow, but I believe God has a plan for me,” Burns explained on What the Heck. “I just spoke with Dana White on Sunday and he said I’m next. He wants to see that fight: Burns vs. Usman. That’s the next fight.
“It was all for the best. I wasn’t feeling good and that was the only reason they took that title fight from me.”
With COVID-19 seemingly in the rear-view mirror, Burns is ready to give his teammate everything he can handle when they meet for the title later on this year.
“I can’t wait to fight for the title and give a show for the fans,” Burns said.
