They say you’re only as good as your last performance, and in Tyron Woodley’s case, that’s pretty bad. So the former welterweight champion is looking to get right back in the cage and remind people why, at one point, he was the most feared 170-pounder on the planet.
Woodley has lost back-to-back bouts for the first time in his career, and both were performances Woodley would rather forget. First, he lost his welterweight title to Kamaru Usman via five-round blowout decision that Woodley later described as an out-of-body experience. Then, last month, he had another such performance, losing a blowout decision to Gilbert Burns at UFC on ESPN 9. The back-to-back bad performances had some questioning whether Woodley might walk away from the sport but instead, “The Chosen One” is doubling down, looking to fight twice more this year.
“I want to fight two more times this year,” Woodley said in an Instagram Live session (quotes from MMAJunkie). “So we are right now in June. I feel like if I can get one on the books sometime in the near future then it still leaves me with November or December to fight again. I want to fight two more times this year. I want to just really knock out some fights. I’m excited about it. I’m ready to get back in there and get after it.”
The question for Woodley then becomes ‘Who?’ Despite the two losses, Woodley is still ranked in the top-5 of the division and thus, only a couple of wins away from another title shot. Finally settling the score with Colby Covington has been thrown out as a possible option for Woodley, as well as revisiting a fight with Leon Edwards that was originally booked before coronavirus intervened. However, given his current situation, Woodley says he does not have the right to call anybody out. Instead, he’ll just take what the UFC brings to him.
“I can’t think of anybody off the top of my head like, ‘Oh, let me fight this motherf*cker,’” Woodley said. “If you lose a fight you don’t be coming out of the gate like, you ain’t really in a position to call anybody out. You kind of just got to take a seat, sit down, be humble, get back on the grind, get ready to beat somebody up. But you don’t really get to call the shots like that, at least I don’t think you should. Some people do. You know you who are.”
Tyron Woodley was the UFC welterweight champion from July of 2016 to March of 2019. He holds notable wins over Robbie Lawler, Demian Maia, Stephen Thompson, and Darren Till.
