UFC on ESPN 9 medical suspensions: Spike Carlyle, Vince Morales face potential six-month layoffs

The majority of the fighters competing at UFC on ESPN 9 this past Saturday night walked away relatively unscathed.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the list of medical suspensions stemming from the event with only two fighters looking at potentially lengthy layoffs.

Spike Carlyle, who engaged in a back-and-forth war against Billy Quarantillo on the main card, has to undergo an MRI on his left knee and get clearance from an orthopedist or sports medicine doctor or he could be out of action for six months until Nov. 27.

Carlyle will face a minimum suspension until at least June 30.

In the opening fight on the entire card, Vince Morales fell by TKO due to a series of vicious leg kicks courtesy of Chris Gutierrez but it’s actually an entirely different injury that has him staring down a potential six-month suspension.

Morales has to gain clearance from an ophthalmologist for a right orbital fracture suffered in the fight or he’ll be looking at a six-month suspension until Nov. 27 as well. Morales will face a minimum suspension until July 15.

As for the main event fighters, Tyron Woodley only has to sit out until July 15 unless he can gain clearance from a doctor for a laceration he suffered over his left eyebrow. Burns will face a minimal 30 day suspension until June 30.
