It’s been over a decade since Oscar De La Hoya’s final fight, yet his confidence hasn’t wavered in regards to a matchup with the UFC’s biggest star, Conor McGregor.

De La Hoya, 47, last competed in December 2008 when he took on Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. It was a one-sided win for Pacquiao, who earned a TKO victory when De La Hoya threw in the towel after the eighth round.

While appearing on the State of Combat podcast, the Golden Boy Promotions founder was asked what would happen in a mythical matchup with McGregor in the squared circle and he predicted it would be a short night at the office.

“Two rounds,” De La Hoya stated if he were given three months to prepare for a 10-round bout. “One thing about me: I went for the kill, always. Look, Conor McGregor... I love him in the octagon. I respect him. I watch him all the time. But the boxing ring is a whole different story.”

Of course, McGregor—being the astute competitor that he is—was well aware of the comments and laid down the gauntlet for De La Hoya to back up his words.

McGregor’s lone professional boxing appearance took place in August 2017 when he faced the undefeated Floyd Mayweather. While “The Notorious” showed flashes of success in the early going, Mayweather took over and finished the former multi-division UFC champion via TKO in the 10th round.

Recently, De La Hoya was once again tied to the MMA world when he praised UFC President Dana White—a longtime foe—for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as the promotion moves ahead with UFC 249 this Saturday. The six-time world boxing champion dipped his toes into the MMA pool in November 2018 when he hosted a one-time event headlined by Tito Ortiz knocking out Chuck Liddell in the first round.
