Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s fight with COVID-19 has taken a turn for the worse, according to a new report from a Russian state-run media outlet.

The father of UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov is on life support and again in a coma less than one week after emerging from a medically-induced coma and showing signs of improvement, RT reported on Tuesday.

Per RT, Khabib Nurmagomedov on Monday told his Instagram followers his father is in “very serious” condition. Several media outlets translated the elder Nurmagomedov’s status as “critical” after he suffered a stroke and underwent heart bypass surgery as the result of a previous heart ailment and the coronavirus.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was airlifted to a military hospital in Moscow this past month after initially being diagnosed with pneumonia in his native Makhachkala, Dagestan. He reportedly refused a coronavirus test before his condition worsened.

This past Friday, the elder Nurmagomedov emerged from a weeklong medically induced coma following heart surgery, per RT. He reportedly showed improvement and was in “serious, but stable” condition, but was unable to speak.

Nurmagomedov reps has declined comment on the coach and trainer’s health status. The champ’s longtime manager, Ali Abdelaziz, recently changed his Instagram profile picture to one of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Recent reports from doctors on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic have reported an uptick in strokes from people under 65 with the virus, according to the New York Times. The potentially deadly condition is just one of several unpredictable side effects that have emerged during the pandemic.

In his Instagram statement, Nurmagomedov urged the public to respect social distancing guidelines and prayed for his father’s health to improve.

“We are asking Allah that he returns him to us,” he said.
