In a night decorated by close decisions, Claudia Gadelha managed to get the nod over Angela Hill in a grueling strawweight clash.
While she had to survive a jaw-dropping knockdown, Gadelha ultimately used her grappling and punching power to sway the judges her way after three rounds. A dejected Hill obviously didn’t agree as she reacted to the decision being read with two judges giving Gadelha the win with 29-28 scores.
“I was pushing the pace,” Gadelha said about her win. “Angela’s fast. I did my best.”
A strong start fueled Gadelha early as the former title contender showed off improved boxing before then transitioning into her best weapon on the ground. Once Gadelha put Hill on the canvas, she was able to control the action while looking to shred her opponent’s defense.
In return, Hill was determined to stay on the feet in the second round and she made the most of the opportunity with a blistering right hand that blasted Gadelha on the jaw. The punch twisted Gadelha around as she tumbled to the ground but Hill couldn’t capitalize in her attempt to get the finish.

After splitting the first two rounds, Hill and Gadelha were both pushing the pace in order to secure the victory. Hill looked like the fresher fighter with fast hands and good footwork while Gadelha was more labored with her movement.
Still, Gadelha threw some clubbing shots with power behind every punch thrown with Hill snapping off jabs and hooks in succession. When it was over, the judges had a tough call to make but it was Gadelha who got the split decision while Hill saw her three-fight win streak come to an end.

As for what comes next, Gadelha turned her attention to a past opponent and another split decision that she’d like to run back.
“Hey Carla Esparza,” Gadelha shouted when calling out the former strawweight champion. “Let’s do it again.”
