It wasn’t pretty but Krzysztof Jotko still managed to get the job done on Saturday night.
The Polish middleweight had to thwart a series of takedown attempts from Eryk Anders over three rounds while making the most of his striking combinations at distance to earn a unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 8.
The scorecards read 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 for Jotko.
“Game plan was knock him out,” Jotko said after his hand was raised. “But he wants to cuddle with me, so I’m sorry.”
Anders undoubtedly had a lot of power behind his punches but he preferred to press the action against the cage while searching for a takedown from the clinch. Despite his best efforts, Anders just couldn’t drag Jotko to the ground as the fighters were jockeying for position.
At distance, Jotko was able to do his best work with several stiff punches cracking Anders on the jaw and backing him off. The key for Jotko was staying one step ahead during the exchanges, showing off his speed and accuracy whenever he had enough room to throw combinations.
While his output wasn’t as high as he likely wanted because he was fighting off Anders’ work from inside the clinch, Jotko nearly doubled his opponent in total strikes landed over three rounds.
It wasn’t the finish he predicted, but the result was still the same as Jotko got the win by unanimous decision. After losing three in a row between 2017 and 2018, Jotko has now rattled off three straight victories following his performance against Anders on Saturday night.
