Glover Teixeira mauled Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC Jacksonville on May 13, but received a medical suspension that initially is longer than his opponent’s.
Eight fighters were given 180-day medical suspensions by the Florida State Boxing Commission following Wednesday’s show in Jacksonville, including the victorious Brazilian light heavyweight.
“My (right) hand is a bit swollen and they asked for a X-ray,” Teixeira told MMA Fighting on Friday. “I hurt my hand in the third round, but I think it’s just a finger. I don’t think it’s serious. I’ll get the X-ray done next week, but I’m hoping it’s just a finger so I can come back quickly.”
“Lionheart” Smith, who lost via fifth-round TKO, received a mandatory 60-day term pending additional testing. Smith lost two teeth during the fight and could have suffered facial fractures.
Ovince Saint Preux, Ricky Simon, Michael Johnson, Omar Morales and Gabriel Benitez were also given six-month suspensions pending medical clearance. Ben Rothwell, Thiago Moises, Sijara Eubanks and Chase Sherman were not given any time off.
