Morning Report: Conor McGregor’s manager says MMA is the priority now, but ‘boxing is definitely something he plans on doing’

Esther Lin, Showtime

On Thursday, Conor McGregor had himself a day, taking to Twitter to throwing shade at practically everyone in the lightweight title picture and lobbying for a fight with newly crowned interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje. But though the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion may currently have his sights set on reclaiming UFC gold, he’s not done with boxing yet either. Or at least, so says his manager.

Speaking to MMAJunkie recently, McGregor’s manager Audie Attar revealed that while McGregor is focused on MMA right now, “Notorious” is also looking to get back into the boxing ring at some point in the future.

“I think he’s thinking MMA first,” Attar said. “Boxing is definitely something he plans on doing, but I think he’s thinking MMA first. And who the opponent is, it could be (Justin Gaethje or Tony Ferguson), it could be someone else. It just depends on how things play out and where he wants to take it. Ultimately, I think all the fans want to see him fight, so it doesn’t matter who he fights – he’ll fight someone.

“Whether he fights (Gaethje) or whether he fights another opponent, we will see. Let’s see how this thing plays out and let’s see how discussions go and then as it relates to him fighting Manny or any other boxer in the future, that’s always a possibility.”

McGregor is 0-1 in professional boxing, having lost The Money Fight to Floyd Mayweather in 2017. That event is the second-largest pay-per-view in history and laid the foundation for a number of other lucrative opportunities for McGregor in boxing at some point. Earlier this year, McGregor began teasing a potential bout with Manny Pacquiao and just last week, McGregor and Oscar de la Hoya both showed some interest in facing one another.

All of that will have to sit on the back burner for now though as McGregor has made his 2020 intentions clear: three fights, culminating with a lightweight title shot at the end of the year. Perhaps that’s why McGregor seems so interested in a bout with Gaethje - it would guarantee him a title shot with a win. However, it seems unlikely that Gaethje would be willing to forego his own title shot just to dance with McGregor, meaning “Notorious” will likely need to find another dance partner before he gets a second crack at lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. And if that’s the case, McGregor’s manager says that’s fine, people will show up to see him fight anyone.

“I think at the end of the day, he is an amazing talent, an amazing not only athlete, but personality – and someone fans want to see compete,” Attar said. “And ultimately, I think that there’s a few matchups that we can make. It’s just about how things play out and what makes sense.”

Response to Conor.

Interesting pillows.

Stipe responds.

Yeah, assuming there’s no truth to Cruz’s comments, he should face repercussions.

Now if Cejudo wins a title in boxing, then he really is the combat sports GOAT.

Darren Till.

Good lord.

Conor had a normal one, huh? Pretty tough to talk sh*t about Justin Gaethje, a genuinely great human being and fighter who is also the most exciting fighter in the sport. Not gonna stop Conor from trying tough, and as Conor himself said, God loves a trier.

Thanks for reading and see y’all tomorrow.
