Tony Ferguson will need some time off to heal his wounds following a brutal battle with Justin Gaethje in the UFC 249 main event.

Ferguson’s 12-fight win streak came to an end after Gaethje landed a series of punishing strikes that forced the referee to stop the fight late into the fifth and final round.

As a result of that back-and-forth battle, Ferguson suffered a broken orbital bone as confirmed to MMA Fighting by sources close to the fighter’s camp. Yahoo Sports initially reported the injury via UFC president Dana White.

Over the course of 20-plus minutes, Ferguson absorbed 143 significant strikes from Gaethje including 100 of those shots landing to the head.

Ferguson had significant swelling on his face including cuts around both of his eyes as well as damage done to his right cheek area. When the fight came to an end, Ferguson’s face showed noticeable damage and he was taken to a local medical facility in Jacksonville, Fla. for treatment afterwards.

As for Gaethje, he remarked at the post fight press conference that his hand was a little banged up from trading punches with Ferguson for nearly all five rounds but otherwise he felt remarkable healthy given the war he went through at UFC 249.
