Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans have confirmed to MMA Fighting that the fight between Anders and Jotko is being targeted for the UFC’s event on May 16. The event is scheduled to take place at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., and airs on ESPN and ESPN+.
News of the targeted bout was first reported by MMA Junkie.
The two 185-pounders were originally set to meet at UFC Portland on April 11 before the event was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
After going through a three-fight losing streak, Anders returned to the win column with back-to-back wins to cap off 2019. “Ya Boi” finished Vinicius Moreira in just over one minute at this past June’s UFC Minneapolis event before earning a split decision win over Gerald Meerschaert four months later at UFC Tampa.
Like his opponent, Jotko was able to snap a three-fight skid in his own right and will enter the May 16 matchup on the momentum of consecutive victories. The 30-year-old earned a unanimous decision win over Alen Amedovski a little over a year ago at UFC St. Petersburg. Jotko would pick up another win, a spilt decision, over Marc-André Barriault at UFC 240. The American Top Team trained fighter was scheduled to face Edmen Shahbazyan at UFC 244 in November, but was forced out of the bout due to an injury.
The May 16 event is headlined by a heavyweight fight between Walt Harris and Alistair Overeem. In addition, a bantamweight bout between Song Yadong and Marlon Vera is slated to take place at the final of three events in Jacksonville over the span of a week.
