Vitor Belfort has an opponent for his first ONE Championship appearance.
In an interview with Asian MMA, “The Phenom” confirmed that he is expecting to fight Alain Ngalani (4-5, 1 NC) when he makes his ONE debut on a date still to be determined. The Singapore-based promotion’s schedule experienced a major change earlier this week when it was announced that all shows through May have been postponed in reaction to the coronavirus pandemic.
Belfort’s debut date had not been officially announced and it is not yet known what weight class he will compete in. Ngalani, 44, has competed solely at heavyweight in his ONE career and is also an experienced kickboxer.
“I like it,” Belfort said of the matchup. “He’s a very tough competitor and very skilled and very strong. A big man. That’s what I’m looking for, for a good challenge.”
Belfort (26-14, 1 NC) last competed at UFC 224 in May 2018, losing by second-round KO to Lyoto Machida, before signing with ONE last February. The 43-year-old is a former UFC light heavyweight champion and has also twice challenged for the UFC middleweight title.
Given that experience, Belfort is not fixating on what tactics Ngalani will bring to the table on fight night.
“It’s hard to see yourself in situations,” Belfort said. “The way I describe it, I’m focused on what my skills and what my strength is, not where my weakness is. That being said, I’m focused on Belfort, not on him.”
