Sean O’Malley: Fighting in Ireland ‘will definitely happen,’ but not likely in 2020

Sean O’Malley is eager to fight in Dublin in front of the “insane” Irish fans. But with International Fight Week already earmarked for his next octagon appearance, he might have to miss the UFC’s next trip.

“Sugar” was still on the sidelines when the promotion announced a Dublin event for Aug. 15. That didn’t keep scores of fans from requesting his presence on the fight card.

While the UFC bantamweight star is adamant he’ll one day compete on the Emerald Isle, it it might not be this year.

“International Fight Week in Vegas is just too perfect of a card to miss out on,” O’Malley told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast.

“I’ve been saying, there’s one other place I would fight, and that’s Dublin. That would be insane, just as insane as fighting on (‘Fight Island’). It would be so fun. It’ll happen. I’m 25 years old, (and) I’ve got a long time and a lot of fights left in me. I think it will definitely happen. If the card is right and the opponent is right, it will happen, there’s no doubt about it.”

Even with the Vegas event likely as his next port of call, O’Malley doesn’t completely rule out an appearance in August.

“Who knows? I’m not going to say yes or no,” he said. “We’ll just have to see how things pan out.”

Given his Irish heritage, O’Malley would be delighted to compete in front of the passionate fans that he’s seen so strongly support Conor McGregor over the years.

“I get a little crap for that like, ‘You’ve never been to Ireland,’ and I haven’t and I would love to go, but my last name is O’Malley and I am Irish and how could you not love the Irish fans? Especially after watching all of Conor’s fights,” he said. “When he comes to Vegas, the whole crowd is Irish – how could I not embrace those Irish fans? It’s not even a business move. I just love to connect with my fans, and when you see a group of people like that, it’s just awesome that I can be a part of that in some way.”

Listen to Sean O’Malley’s debut appearance on Eurobash. It begins at 47:30.
