Journey Newson didn’t appear to get the best start in his second Octagon bout. But he rebounded quickly and finished the show.

A head kick from Houston resident Domingo Pilarte appeared to rattle Newson, who returned fire with an overhand right that floored his opponent.

Just 38 seconds into the opening frame, Newson had picked up his first Octagon win after referee Jacob Montalvo stepped in to save Pilarte from further punishment in the UFC 247 preliminary-card bout at Toyota Center.

Like Pilarte, Newson had lost out of the gate in his Octagon debut. A decision loss to Ricardo Ramos this past June left the Portland, Ore., resident with a 9-1 resume.

Now, Newson has a new clip for his highlight reel and leaves Pilarte at 8-2 with back-to-back UFC losses after a debut setback against Felipe Colares.
