Rhys McKee will get his first opportunity to fight for Cage Warriors gold on May 16 when he competes for the prestigious welterweight title in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Cage Warriors confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on the back of the release of former champion Ross Houston, and his subsequent vacation of the title. The May marquee will be the first time the promotion has hosted an event at SSE Arena.

A title with a rich history, U.K. legend Dan Hardy previously held the belt as well as other UFC veterans like Nicolas Dalby and Irish fan favorite Cathal Pendred.

The Northern Irish fighter’s opponent for the title fight is still to be determined.

McKee (10-2-1) is a former lightweight champion under the BAMMA banner. A knockout artist, he recently moved up to welterweight and recorded a resounding stoppage over promotional veteran, Hakon Foss. Since signing with Cage Warriors, “Skeletor” has recorded three consecutive wins over Foss, Perry Goodwin and Jefferson George.

Considered one of the best prospects on the island, a Cage Warriors championship might be just what’s needed to secure the 24-year-old a UFC contract.

In late January, Cage Warriors revealed an Irish-heavy cast for the Belfast event with Joe McColgan, Ian Garry, Decky McAleenan and Paul Hughes all set to compete on the night.
