Paulo Costa calls Israel Adesanya ‘disgusting’ after ‘Twin Towers’ reference

Paulo Costa believes that Israel Adesanya went too far in talking up a feud.

Adesanya was in Auckland, New Zealand, on Friday to build up his March 7 middleweight title defense against Yoel Romero at UFC 248, and “The Last Stylebender” explained the rationale behind setting up his match with Romero.

The champion’s choice of words left something to be desired, as he made an offhand reference to the “9/11” tragedy in predicting how his fight with Romero will go.

“He’s the guy that no one wants to fight,” Adesanya said. “He’s the oogy-boogeyman. Even Darren Till. ‘Oh, I’ll fight anyone except Yoel.’ Like, why? I’ve seen him get rocked. I’ve seen him get stopped. I’ve seen him cry. I’ll make him cry.

“He’s human like everyone else. Everyone likes to make this myth like, he’s like kicking steel; you can hit him and he doesn’t fall. I’ll touch him enough times that eventually, he’ll crumble like the Twin Towers.”

The simile did not appear to go over well with the Auckland crowd and Costa’s reaction on social media was even harsher. “Borrachinha” had a stern message for Adesanya, admonishing him for making light of the notorious terrorist attack.

“Adesanya, you are a disgusting piece of s*it,” Costa wrote. “How dare you make a joke disrespecting the thousands who died and the heroic firefighters and police.

“I will really kill you, dirty kiwi.”

While Costa’s own language could end up being scrutinized, it’s clear he feels strongly about settling things with Adesanya in the cage. The 28-year-old Brazilian is 13-0 with wins in all five of his UFC appearances (including a unanimous decision over Romero last August) and a clash with Adesanya seems inevitable.
